『Burning Bridges』は、BON JOVIらしい大きなメロディとロックの骨格を保ちながら、華やかさだけではない落ち着いた陰影を見せる第13作だ。リッチー・サンボラの脱退後、ジョン・ボン・ジョヴィ(ヴォーカル)、ティコ・トーレス(ドラム)、デヴィッド・ブライアン(キーボード)、ヒュー・マクドナルド(ベース)に、新たにフィル・Xがギターで加わった。長年のレコード会社との契約を締めくくる、過渡的な性格の作品でもある。 未発表曲と新曲を組み合わせた構成のため、アップテンポの曲でもどこか振り返るような空気がある。“Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning”の推進力や表題曲の率直さは、変化のただ中にあるバンドの姿を映す。派手なヒット志向ではなく、長いキャリアの節目で今の自分たちを見つめるような感触を持つ。“We Don't Run”の力強い推進力、“Life Is Beautiful”の温かなメロディは、変化の途上にあるバンドの現在地を伝える。フィル・Xの参加は、サンボラなき後のサウンドに新たな色を加えた。派手な話題性はないものの、長いキャリアの隙間を丁寧に埋めるような誠実さがある。歌を中心に聴きたい人に届く、内省的な一枚である。

Burning Bridges is the thirteenth album, which shows calm shading beyond mere glamour while keeping Bon Jovi's big melodies and rock frame. After Richie Sambora's departure, Phil X newly joined on guitar alongside Jon Bon Jovi (vocals), Tico Torres (drums), David Bryan (keyboards) and Hugh McDonald (bass). It is also a transitional work that closed out their longtime record deal. Because of a construction combining unreleased songs and new material, even the up-tempo songs have a somewhat reflective air. The drive of "Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning" and the frankness of the title track mirror a band in the midst of change. Rather than aiming for flashy hits, it has the feel of looking at their present selves at a milestone in a long career. An introspective record that reaches those who want to listen with the singing at the center.
