What About Now

『What About Now』は、BON JOVIが、大きなコーラス、端正なギター、そして開かれた明快なメロディを通して、現代的で洗練されたアリーナ・ロックを描いた作品だ。前作『The Circle』の、力強いロック路線を受け継ぎつつ、より前向きなメッセージ性を、色濃く打ち出している。楽曲は、親しみやすく、整理されているが、そのリズムとヴォーカルには、長年のバンドならではの、まっすぐで力強い熱が、しっかりと残されている。 冒頭の、力強い表題曲的シングル“Because We Can”の推進力、そして表題曲“What About Now”のドラマ性まで、収録曲は、希望や、迷いといった、複雑な感情を、等身大の、共感しやすい言葉で扱っている点も印象的だ。“Amen”“I'm With You”“Pictures of You”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。大きな会場に似合う、確かなスケール感がある。 長年培ってきた、アリーナ・ロックの、大きなスケール感と、日常の感情に、そっと寄り添う、優しい歌心とを、見事に併せ持った一枚だ。本作は、長年バンドを支えた、名ギタリスト、リッチー・サンボラが参加した、最後のスタジオ・アルバムとなった。彼のギターと、コーラスが刻まれた、一つの時代の節目となる、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。バンドの円熟を示す一枚だ。

What About Now is a work on which Bon Jovi, through big choruses, trim guitar and open, clear melody, draws modern, refined arena rock. Inheriting the powerful rock direction of the previous The Circle, it strongly puts forward a more positive message. The songs are accessible and organized, yet their rhythm and vocals firmly keep the straight, powerful heat particular to a long-running band. From the drive of the powerful lead single “Because We Can” to the drama of the title track “What About Now,” it is also striking how the songs treat complex emotions such as hope and confusion in life-size, relatable words, while cuts like “Amen,” “I’m With You” and “Pictures of You” convey the work’s fullness. There is a sure scale that suits large venues. A record beautifully holding both the large scale of long-cultivated arena rock and a gentle songcraft that quietly draws close to daily emotion. This work became the last studio album with the great guitarist Richie Sambora, who long supported the band. Inscribed with his guitar and choruses, it is an engaging, fulfilling work marking a milestone of an era — a record showing the band’s maturity.
