Without Love

『Without Love』は、BLACK'N BLUEが鋭いギター・リフとキャッチーなコーラスを、より滑らかな80年代サウンドへまとめた第2作だ。1985年9月に発表された。プロデュースはブルース・フェアバーン、エンジニアはボブ・ロックという布陣で、ヴァンクーヴァーのリトル・マウンテン・サウンドで録音されている。デビュー作の粗さを後退させ、洗練された方向へ舵を切った。ちなみにボン・ジョヴィが『Slippery When Wet』でフェアバーンを起用するのは、この後のことである。 ジェイミー・セント・ジェイムスの高い声とトミー・セイヤーのギターは、曲に軽快さと押し出しを同時に与える。表題曲と“Miss Mystery”はブライアン・アダムスの盟友ジム・ヴァランスとの共作で、後者はラジオでヒットした。“We Got the Fire”にはラヴァーボーイのマイク・レノとTOTOのスティーヴ・ポーカロが参加している。“Nature of the Beach”は映画『Vision Quest』で使われ、マドンナのシングル“Gambler”のB面にもなった。同年にはキッスとツアーを回っている。ポップな入口とハード・ロックの芯を両立した一枚だ。

Without Love is the second album, gathering sharp guitar riffs and catchy choruses into a smoother 1980s sound. Released in September 1985. With Bruce Fairbairn producing and Bob Rock engineering, it was recorded at Little Mountain Sound in Vancouver. It pulls back the debut's roughness and steers toward polish. Incidentally, Bon Jovi's hiring of Fairbairn for Slippery When Wet came after this. Jaime St. James's high voice and Tommy Thayer's guitar give the songs lightness and push at once. The title track and “Miss Mystery” were co-written with Jim Vallance, Bryan Adams's longtime partner, and the latter was a radio success. “We Got the Fire” features Loverboy's Mike Reno and Toto's Steve Porcaro. “Nature of the Beach” was used in the film Vision Quest and also became the B-side of Madonna's single “Gambler.” That year they toured with Kiss. A record that balances a pop way in with a hard rock core.
