『Technical Ecstasy』は、BLACK SABBATHが、従来の、あの圧倒的な重量感を、しっかりと土台にしながらも、鍵盤、より複雑な楽曲構成、そしてメロディの、豊かな起伏へと、大胆に踏み込んだ、意欲的な作品だ。時代の変化の中で、バンドが、自らの様式を、大きく更新しようと試みた一枚である。トニー・アイオミのギターは、依然として、楽曲の中心に、力強く据えられており、オジー・オズボーンの声は、その不穏な空気を、しっかりと保ちながらも、新しい色彩の中を、力強く進んでいく。 冒頭を飾る、力強い“Back Street Kids”、そして“You Won't Change Me”の、ある陰影、さらに、感傷的な“It's Alright”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Rock 'n' Roll Doctor”、そして、長いグルーヴを持つ“Dirty Women”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。より幅広い音楽性が、色濃く表れた内容だ。 “Back Street Kids”の、あの勢い、“You Won't Change Me”の、深い陰影、そして“Dirty Women”の、長く粘るグルーヴは、このアルバムが、単なる変化ではなく、あくまで、その表現の拡張を目指していることを、力強く示している一枚だ。BLACK SABBATHが、自らの様式を、大きく揺さぶりながらも、その重い個性を、決して手放さなかった、聴き応えのある一枚と言える。バンドの挑戦が光る一枚だ。

Technical Ecstasy is an ambitious work on which Black Sabbath, while firmly basing itself on its former overwhelming weight, boldly stepped into keyboards, more complex song construction and the rich sway of melody. A record on which, amid the changing times, the band tried to greatly update its own style. Tony Iommi’s guitar is still powerfully placed at the songs’ center, and Ozzy Osbourne’s voice, while firmly keeping the uneasy air, moves powerfully through new colors. From the powerful opener “Back Street Kids” and the shading of “You Won’t Change Me” to the sentimental “It’s Alright,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Rock ’n’ Roll Doctor” and the long-grooving “Dirty Women” convey the work’s fullness. Content on which broader musicality strongly appears. A record on which the momentum of “Back Street Kids,” the deep shading of “You Won’t Change Me” and the long, sticky groove of “Dirty Women” powerfully show that this album aims not at mere change but at an expansion of its expression. An engaging record on which Black Sabbath, while greatly shaking its own style, by no means let go of its heavy character — a record where the band’s challenge shines.
