Cross Purposes

『Cross Purposes』は、トニー・マーティン期のBLACK SABBATHが、あの陰鬱なリフの重さと、歌メロディの、確かな輪郭とを、同時に磨き込んだ、充実の作品だ。一度は離れたギーザー・バトラーが復帰した時期の一枚でもある。トニー・アイオミのギターは、低く力強くうねり、リズム隊は、遅いテンポの中にも、鋭い張りを、しっかりと残している。トニー・マーティンの、伸びやかな声が、その重苦しい和音の隙間に、人間的で深い哀感を、力強く通していく。 冒頭を飾る、力強い“I Witness”、そして“Cross of Thorns”のドラマ性、さらに、攻撃的な“Psychophobia”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Virtual Death”、そして“Dying for Love”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。トニー・マーティンの、あの力強い歌唱が、全編で冴え渡っている。 往年の、あのブルース由来の粗さを、しっかりと保ちながらも、90年代らしい、硬質な音像へと、力強く踏み込んだことで、バンドの、また別の成熟期を示す一枚となっている。ヘヴィさだけでなく、リフと歌の、その巧みな受け渡しや、静かな場面に残る、確かな緊張にも、じっくりと耳を向けたい。トニー・マーティン期の、その充実を示す、聴き応えのある一枚と言える。バンドの安定した実力が光る一枚だ。

Cross Purposes is a fulfilling work on which the Tony Martin–period Black Sabbath honed both the weight of gloomy riffs and the sure outline of vocal melody at once. A record from the period when Geezer Butler, once departed, returned. Tony Iommi’s guitar undulates low and powerfully, and the rhythm section firmly keeps a sharp tension even at slow tempos. Tony Martin’s soaring voice powerfully passes a human, deep sorrow through the gaps of the heavy chords. From the powerful opener “I Witness” and the drama of “Cross of Thorns” to the aggressive “Psychophobia,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Virtual Death” and “Dying for Love” convey the work’s fullness. Tony Martin’s powerful singing is in sharp form throughout. A record that, while firmly keeping the old blues-derived roughness, became one showing another mature period of the band by powerfully stepping into a hard sound particular to the 1990s. One wants to carefully turn an ear not only to the heaviness but to the deft handoff of riff and singing and the sure tension remaining in quiet passages.
