Stronger Than Death

『Stronger Than Death』は、BLACK LABEL SOCIETYが分厚いギター・トーンと重心の低いリズムによって、曲に荒々しい推進力を与えた第2作だ。前作で示した路線をさらに重く突き詰め、ザック・ワイルドのしゃがれた歌とうねるリフが、圧倒的な迫力を生み出している。豪快なリフの間に差し込まれるメロディが、単なる力押しには終わらせない。 “Superterrorizer”“Counterfeit God”“13 Years of Grief”“Just Killing Time”といった楽曲では、重量級のグルーヴと攻撃性が前面に出ている。一方で“Ain't Life Grand”“Love Reign Down”のような楽曲には、叙情的なメロディと哀感が宿っている。ダウン・チューニングされた重いギターと、うねるようなグルーヴが、ドゥーム・メタルにも通じる圧倒的な重量感を生み出している。“All For You”“Rust”“Phony Smiles & Fake Hellos”といった楽曲にも、攻撃的なエネルギーが刻まれている。ソロ名義時代の表情を残しつつ、バンドとしての輪郭をより明確にした本作は、ヘヴィで粗野でありながら、確かな歌心も併せ持つ一枚である。ザック・ワイルドのギタリストとしての個性が、全編で存分に発揮されている。

Stronger Than Death is the second album on which BLACK LABEL SOCIETY gave the songs a raw drive through thick guitar tone and low-slung rhythm. Pushing the direction of the debut to something even heavier, Zakk Wylde’s hoarse singing and surging riffs create overwhelming force. The melody slipped between the bold riffs keeps it from ending as mere brute force. On “Superterrorizer,” “Counterfeit God,” “13 Years of Grief” and “Just Killing Time,” heavy groove and aggression come to the front. Meanwhile, songs like “Ain't Life Grand” and “Love Reign Down” hold lyrical melody and melancholy. Keeping the look of the solo-name period while making the band’s outline clearer, it is a record that is heavy and rough yet also holds firm melodic sense, with Zakk Wylde’s personality as a guitarist fully displayed throughout.
