『Sonic Brew』は、BLACK LABEL SOCIETYが重量感のあるリフ、泥臭いブルース感、荒れたヴォーカルを混ぜ合わせたデビュー作だ。オジー・オズボーンのギタリストとして名を馳せたザック・ワイルドが、自らのバンドとして本格的に始動させた一枚である。曲は重く押し出す一方で、ギターには泣きのフレーズや南部ロック的な揺らぎもあり、単調には終わらない。 “Bored to Tears”“Hey You (Batch of Lies)”“Mother Mary”“T.A.Z.”といった楽曲では、太いリフとザック特有のピンチ・ハーモニクスが強い個性を放っている。“Rose Petalled Garden”“Black Pearl”のような楽曲にも、ブルースに根ざした哀感が息づいている。“Peddlers of Death”“World of Trouble”“Beneath the Tree”といった楽曲にも、荒々しいエネルギーが息づいている。オジーのバンドで培った圧倒的なギター・テクニックを、より自由に、より重く解き放った一枚と言える。荒々しい演奏の奥には、メロディを大切にする確かな感覚がある。ヘヴィネスとギター・ヒーロー的な表現を同居させた本作は、その後長く続くバンドの原点となる、力強い一枚である。ザックの圧倒的なギター・プレイが、全編を通して確かな軸となっている。

Sonic Brew is the debut on which BLACK LABEL SOCIETY blended weighty riffs, earthy blues feel and rough vocals. It is the record on which Zakk Wylde — famed as Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist — properly launched his own band. The songs push heavily forward, yet the guitar has weeping phrases and Southern-rock sway, so it never turns monotonous. On “Bored to Tears,” “Hey You (Batch of Lies),” “Mother Mary” and “T.A.Z.,” thick riffs and Zakk’s signature pinch harmonics radiate a strong personality. Songs like “Rose Petalled Garden” and “Black Pearl” breathe a blues-rooted melancholy too. Behind the raw playing is a firm sense of valuing melody. Housing heaviness and guitar-hero expression together, it is a powerful record that became the origin of a long-running band, with Zakk’s overwhelming guitar a firm axis throughout.
