『Sliver & Gold』は、BACKYARD BABIESがストリート感のあるロックンロールを、荒々しさを失わない演奏で鳴らした第8作だ。2019年3月にセンチュリー・メディアから発表された。タイトルは“Silver”ではなく“Sliver”で、しばしば誤記されるがこれが正しい表記である。ざらついたギター、少し後ろへもたれるようなビート、挑発的でありながらどこか哀愁を含む歌が、派手な装飾より先にバンドの空気を伝える。曲は短く直接的だが、パンク、ハード・ロック、グラムの要素が自然に混ざり、単純な直線では終わらない。 勢いよく駆け抜ける曲ではリフの粗さが熱を生み、テンポを落とした曲ではメロディの陰影と声のかすれが印象を残す。冒頭の“Good Morning Midnight”から“Shovin' Rocks”“44 Undead”、締めの“Laugh Now Cry Later”まで、10曲が淀みなく流れる。バンド自身は最もまとまりのある作品と語り、結成30周年を目前にした自信がにじむ。本国では5位以内に入った。反抗的な姿勢とフックのあるサビを同居させ、北欧ロックンロールの不良っぽい魅力を現在形で提示した一枚だ。

Sliver & Gold is the eighth album, on which Backyard Babies played street-flavored rock 'n' roll without losing any roughness. Released on Century Media in March 2019. The title is “Sliver,” not “Silver” — it's often misprinted, but this is the correct form. Gritty guitar, a beat that leans slightly back, and singing that is provocative yet somehow wistful convey the band's air before any flashy ornamentation. The songs are short and direct, but punk, hard rock and glam elements mix naturally, so it doesn't end as a simple straight line. On the songs that run hard, the riffs' coarseness generates heat; on the slower ones, melodic shadow and the rasp in the voice leave the impression. From the opener “Good Morning Midnight” through “Shovin' Rocks” and “44 Undead” to the closing “Laugh Now Cry Later,” ten songs flow without stalling. The band themselves call it their most cohesive work, and the confidence of a group approaching its 30th anniversary shows. It reached the top five at home. Putting a rebellious stance and hook-filled choruses side by side, it presents Nordic rock 'n' roll's delinquent appeal in the present tense.
