『Waking the Fallen』は、AVENGED SEVENFOLDが個性を鮮明にした第2作であり、Hopelessから発表された。本作はリード・ギターのシニスター・ゲイツとベースのジョニー・クリストが揃った最初のフル・アルバムで、後年まで続く中核ラインナップがここで完成した。デビュー作より歌唱の比重が増し、激しいメタルコアにドラマティックな旋律と展開が丁寧に重ねられている。プロデュースはマドロックが手掛け、録音はハリウッドのスタジオで行われた。 先行シングル“Unholy Confessions”は、鋭いリフと絶叫、そして印象的なコーラスを併せ持つ初期の代表曲だ。7分に及ぶ“Second Heartbeat”ではザ・レヴの超絶的なドラムとゲイツのソロが冴え渡り、二部構成の“I Won't See You Tonight”は叙情性を示す。この時期のバンドはツアーで着実に評価を高め、メタルコア・シーンの新星として注目を集めていった。攻撃性とメロディ、そして構築の巧みさが結び付いた本作は、バンドをアンダーグラウンドから押し上げ、ゴールド認定を獲得した。メタルコア期の到達点として今も高く評価される一枚である。

Waking the Fallen is the second album, on which Avenged Sevenfold sharpened its identity, released on Hopeless. It is the first full album with lead guitarist Synyster Gates and bassist Johnny Christ together, completing the core lineup that would last for years. The weight of singing increases from the debut, and dramatic melody and development are carefully layered onto fierce metalcore. Mudrock produced. The lead single "Unholy Confessions" is an early signature song combining sharp riffs, screams and a striking chorus. On the seven-minute "Second Heartbeat," The Rev's virtuoso drumming and Gates' solo shine, and the two-part "I Won't See You Tonight" shows lyricism. Binding aggression, melody and skillful construction, it lifted the band up from the underground and earned gold certification. It is still highly regarded as the peak of their metalcore era.
