Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

『Sounding the Seventh Trumpet』は、カリフォルニア州ハンティントン・ビーチ出身のAVENGED SEVENFOLDが、メンバーがまだ十代で高校在学中に録音したデビュー作だ。当初はGood Life Recordingsから発表され、後にHopelessから再発された。激しいスクリーモとメタルコアを基盤に、ハードコア、メロディック・デス、クラシック・メタルの要素を交差させ、荒削りながら強い野心を刻んでいる。M・シャドウズの絶叫、ザッキー・ヴェンジェンスのリフ、そしてジェイムズ・“ザ・レヴ”・サリヴァンの手数の多いドラムが、初期衝動をそのまま音にしている。 冒頭の“To End the Rapture”は、加入したばかりのシニスター・ゲイツを迎えて再録音され、フルバンドの厚みを得た。“Turn the Other Way”“Darkness Surrounding”の激しさに対し、パンク調の“Streets”やピアノ主体のバラード“Warmness on the Soul”は早くも表現の幅を示す。完成度こそ後年に及ばないが、後にジャンルを横断していくバンドの原型が、生々しいエネルギーとともにここに刻まれている。

Sounding the Seventh Trumpet is the debut album by Avenged Sevenfold, from Huntington Beach, California, recorded while the members were still teenagers in high school. It was first released on Good Life Recordings and later reissued on Hopeless. Built on fierce screamo and metalcore, it crosses in hardcore, melodic death and classic-metal elements, marking a rough but strong ambition. M. Shadows' screams, Zacky Vengeance's riffs and the busy drumming of James "The Rev" Sullivan put the band's early impulse straight into sound. The opening "To End the Rapture" was re-recorded with newly joined Synyster Gates, gaining full-band thickness. Against the ferocity of "Turn the Other Way" and "Darkness Surrounding," the punk-flavored "Streets" and the piano-led ballad "Warmness on the Soul" already show a breadth of expression. It does not match later polish, but the prototype of a band that would go on to cross genres is marked here, along with raw energy.
