Life Is But a Dream...

『Life Is But a Dream...』は、AVENGED SEVENFOLDがメタルの枠を大きく越え、実験性と実存的な問いを突き詰めた第8作だ。前作から約7年という自身最長の間隔を経て、ワーナーへ復帰して発表された。ジョー・バレシとの共同プロデュースのもと、アルベール・カミュの小説『異邦人』に着想を得た、生と死、存在の意味をめぐる思索が全編を貫く。ジャズやオーケストラ、電子音までを取り込んだ大胆な音作りが特徴だ。 先行シングル“Nobody”は複雑な展開の中に強いメロディを備え、“We Love You”“Mattel”は攻撃性と実験性を両立させる。終盤の“G”“(O)rdinary”“(D)eath”は連なって一つの組曲を形づくり、頭文字が「GOD」を綴る仕掛けも凝らされている。予測不能な構成ゆえに賛否を大きく呼んだが、バンドが安住を拒む姿勢を鮮烈に示した。“Cosmic”“Beautiful Morning”のように、静謐さと激しさが同居する楽曲も並ぶ。ミックスはアンディ・ウォレスが手掛け、多層的な音像を一枚の作品としてまとめ上げている。実存的なテーマと前衛的な音楽を結んだ、キャリアでも最も大胆な一枚である。

Life Is But a Dream... is the eighth album, on which Avenged Sevenfold greatly crosses beyond the frame of metal, pursuing experiment and existential questions. Released after about seven years — the band's longest gap — on a return to Warner. Co-produced with Joe Barresi, it is inspired by Albert Camus' novel The Stranger, with meditation on life, death and the meaning of existence running throughout. A bold sound taking in jazz, orchestra and even electronic textures marks it out. The lead single "Nobody" carries strong melody within complex development, and "We Love You" and "Mattel" combine aggression with experiment. The late "G," "(O)rdinary" and "(D)eath" link into a single suite, with a device spelling "GOD" through their initials. Its unpredictable structure drew strongly mixed opinion, but it vividly showed the band's refusal to settle. Binding existential themes with avant-garde music, it is one of the boldest records in the career.
