Gravitas

『Gravitas』は、ASIAが持つ壮大なメロディ感覚と、端正なプログレッシヴ・ロックの構築美を、落ち着いた重心で描いた作品だ。長年ギターを務めたスティーヴ・ハウに代わり、若きサム・コールソンが加入し、バンドに新鮮な活力をもたらしている。キーボードとギターは競い合うのではなく、楽曲の景色を広げるために配置され、ヴォーカルの旋律を丁寧に支えている。サム・コールソンの加入は、ベテラン・バンドに若々しいエネルギーと新鮮なギター・サウンドをもたらした。ジョン・ウェットンの歌声が刻まれた本作は、重厚さと叙情が調和した味わい深い内容であると同時に、彼の遺したASIAでの足跡を振り返るうえでも特別な意味を持つ作品となっている。 華やかなフックを備えながらも、ここでは成熟した陰影が重要な役割を果たしている。ドラマティックでありながら過剰に飾り立てることなく、曲の本質的な魅力を丁寧に引き出している。ジョン・ウェットンの情感豊かな歌声とジェフ・ダウンズの壮麗な鍵盤が、変わらぬケミストリーを聴かせる本作は、結果として、オリジナル・メンバーであるウェットンが参加した最後のASIA作品となった。ASIAのメロディックな魅力をじっくりと味わいたい時に寄り添う、味わい深い一枚である。

Gravitas is a work on which ASIA depicted its grand melodic sense and the neat constructive beauty of progressive rock with a settled center of gravity. In place of Steve Howe, long the guitarist, the young Sam Coulson joined, bringing the band fresh vitality. The keyboards and guitar, rather than competing, are placed to widen the songs’ scenery and carefully support the vocal melody. While furnished with flashy hooks, here a matured shadow plays an important role. Dramatic yet without ornamenting excessively, it carefully draws out the songs’ essential appeal. With John Wetton’s emotive voice and Geoff Downes’ magnificent keyboards offering an unchanged chemistry, this record turned out to be the last ASIA work in which the original member Wetton took part. It is a flavorful record to keep company when you want to savor the melodic appeal of ASIA at leisure.
