War Eternal

『War Eternal』は、ARCH ENEMYが鋭いメロディック・デス・メタルのリフと圧倒的な咆哮を結び付けて再始動した、新たなヴォーカリストを迎えての第一作だ。長年バンドを牽引したアンジェラ・ゴソウに代わり、カナダのジ・アゴニストで活躍したアリッサ・ホワイト＝グラズが加入し、その凄みと表現力を兼ね備えたヴォーカルがバンドに新鮮な力をもたらした。ツイン・ギターは攻撃的に切り込みながら、随所で大きな旋律を描き、曲にヒロイックな高揚感を与えている。 表題曲“War Eternal”の勇壮さ、“You Will Know My Name”の力強いアンセム性、“As the Pages Burn”“Never Forgive, Never Forget”の攻撃性など、勢いだけでなくサビやリード・フレーズの記憶に残る強さが際立っている。“No More Regrets”“Graveyard of Dreams”“Time Is Black”“Avalanche”といった楽曲でも、勢いと旋律が緊密に結び付いており、アリッサの加入はバンドに新たな時代の到来を告げるものとなった。この時期に加入したジェフ・ルーミスら新たなギター陣も、演奏に一段の厚みを加えている。メロデスの激しさとドラマ性を高い水準で両立させた本作は、ヴォーカリストの交代を見事な飛躍へと変えた、バンドの新章を告げる充実作である。

War Eternal is the first album with a new vocalist, on which ARCH ENEMY restarted by binding sharp melodic-death riffs to an overwhelming roar. In place of Angela Gossow, who had led the band for years, Alissa White-Gluz — active in Canada’s The Agonist — joined, and her vocals, combining menace and expressiveness, brought the band fresh power. The twin guitars cut in aggressively while drawing big melodies here and there, giving the songs a heroic elation. From the valor of the title track “War Eternal” and the strong anthem quality of “You Will Know My Name” to the aggression of “As the Pages Burn” and “Never Forgive, Never Forget,” the memorable strength of the choruses and lead phrases stands out, not just momentum. New guitarists including Jeff Loomis, who joined at this time, add a further layer of depth to the playing. Balancing melodic-death ferocity with drama at a high level, it turns a change of vocalist into a splendid leap, announcing a new chapter for the band.
