『Wages of Sin』は、アンジェラ・ゴソウの加入によってARCH ENEMYの表現を大きく更新した、バンドの歴史における転機となる作品だ。女性でありながら獰猛なグロウルを繰り出すゴソウの登場は、エクストリーム・メタルの世界に大きな衝撃を与えた。その苛烈なヴォーカルの前で、マイケルとクリストファーのアモット兄弟による流麗なツイン・ギターが、鮮明で叙情的なメロディを描き出していく。 “Enemy Within”“Ravenous”“Savage Messiah”“Burning Angel”といった楽曲では、ブルータルな重さと叙情的なリードの対比が、各曲の緊張を極限まで高めている。“Dead Bury Their Dead”“The First Deadly Sin”“Web Of Lies”といった楽曲でも、獰猛さと叙情性が緊密に結び付いており、本作をきっかけにARCH ENEMYは世界的なメロディック・デス・メタルの最前線へと躍り出た。“Heart Of Darkness”“Shadows And Dust”のような楽曲には、攻撃性の中に確かな構築美も宿る。ゴソウの強烈な個性とアモット兄弟のメロディ・センスが理想的に噛み合った本作は、バンドの知名度と影響力を国際的に大きく広げ、メロディック・デス・メタルの歴史における重要作として今も語り継がれている。

Wages of Sin is a turning point in the band’s history, on which the arrival of Angela Gossow greatly renewed ARCH ENEMY’s expression. Gossow — a woman delivering a ferocious growl — sent a great shock through the world of extreme metal. Before her fierce vocals, the flowing twin guitars of the Amott brothers, Michael and Christopher, draw vivid, lyrical melody. On “Enemy Within,” “Ravenous,” “Savage Messiah” and “Burning Angel,” the contrast of brutal weight and lyrical leads raises each song’s tension to the limit. Songs like “Heart Of Darkness” and “Shadows And Dust” carry a firm constructive beauty within the aggression. Where Gossow’s strong personality and the Amott brothers’ melodic sense meshed ideally, this record greatly widened the band’s fame and influence internationally, and is still spoken of as an important work in the history of melodic death metal.
