Anthems of Rebellion

『Anthems of Rebellion』は、ARCH ENEMYが切れ味あるツイン・ギター、重いリズム、アンジェラ・ゴソウの強烈な咆哮を使い、攻撃性とメロディを高い水準で結び付けた作品だ。前作『Wages of Sin』で確立したゴソウ体制のサウンドを、より多彩で洗練された形へと発展させている。曲は高速でも輪郭が明快で、リフとリードの対比が強い緊張を作り出している。 “We Will Rise”の疾走感あふれるアンセム性、“Dead Eyes See No Future”“Silent Wars”“Instinct”といった楽曲の攻撃性など、極端な音像の中に印象的なフックを置くことで、アルバム全体には大きな推進力が生まれている。“Leader Of The Rats”“End Of The Line”“Saints And Sinners”といった楽曲でも、攻撃性とメロディが緊密に絡み合い、疾走するリフと荘厳なアレンジの緩急が、アルバム全体に映画的な起伏を与えている。随所に配されたクリーン・ヴォーカルやインストゥルメンタル的な要素も、作品に表現の幅を与えている。攻撃性と記憶に残る旋律を高い次元で両立させた本作は、現代メロディック・デスの存在感を鮮やかに示した、ゴソウ期の充実を伝える一枚である。

Anthems of Rebellion is a record on which ARCH ENEMY used keen twin guitars, heavy rhythm and Angela Gossow’s fierce roar to join aggression and melody at a high level. It develops the Gossow-era sound established on Wages of Sin into a more varied, refined form. However fast the songs, the outline is clear, and the contrast of riffs and leads creates strong tension. The driving anthem quality of “We Will Rise” and the aggression of “Dead Eyes See No Future,” “Silent Wars” and “Instinct” — by placing memorable hooks within an extreme sonic image, the whole album gains great drive. Clean vocals and instrumental touches placed here and there also give the work a wider range. Balancing aggression with memorable melody at a high level, it vividly shows the presence of modern melodic death, conveying the fullness of the Gossow era.
