『Deceivers』は、ARCH ENEMYが得意とするメロディック・デス・メタルの設計を、非常に高い精度で磨き上げた作品だ。アリッサ・ホワイト＝グラズの強烈なグロウルと、アモット兄弟の系譜を継ぐ流麗かつ攻撃的なツイン・ギター、そして躍動するリズム隊が、重さと叙情を同時に押し出していく。クリーン・ヴォーカルも効果的に導入され、曲ごとのフックはきわめて強く、極端な音楽性でありながら開かれた高揚感を持っている。 “Handshake With Hell”“Deceiver, Deceiver”“House Of Mirrors”“Sunset Over The Empire”といった楽曲では、苛烈な攻撃性と大きく開くメロディが緊密に結び付き、アルバムに強い推進力を生み出している。“The Watcher”“Poisoned Arrow”“Spreading Black Wings”“Mourning Star”といった楽曲でも、攻撃性とメロディが緊密に結び付き、現代のメロディック・デス・メタルを牽引するバンドの充実ぶりが全編に息づいている。“In The Eye Of The Storm”“Exiled From Earth”のような楽曲には、劇的な構築美も宿っている。往年の攻撃性とメロディを保ちながら、現代的な洗練を加えた本作は、アリッサ期のARCH ENEMYが到達した成熟を鮮やかに示す、完成度の高い一枚である。

Deceivers is a record on which ARCH ENEMY honed its signature melodic-death-metal design with very high precision. Alissa White-Gluz’s fierce growl, the flowing yet aggressive twin guitars carrying on the Amott lineage, and a dynamic rhythm section push out weight and lyricism at once. Clean vocals are also introduced effectively, the hooks are extremely strong song by song, and for all its extreme musicality it holds an open sense of elation. On “Handshake With Hell,” “Deceiver, Deceiver,” “House Of Mirrors” and “Sunset Over The Empire,” fierce aggression and widely opening melody join tightly, generating strong drive across the album. Songs like “In The Eye Of The Storm” and “Exiled From Earth” carry a dramatic constructive beauty. Keeping the aggression and melody of old while adding modern refinement, it vividly shows the maturity reached by Alissa-era ARCH ENEMY — an accomplished record.
