『Set the World on Fire』は、ANNIHILATORが、スラッシュ由来の切迫感を残しながらも、より大きなメロディと、整理された明快な構成へと踏み込んだ、意欲的な第3作だ。前2作の、鋭く複雑な作風から、よりメロディックで、キャッチーな方向へと、大きく舵を切っている。新ヴォーカリストにアーロン・ランドールを迎え、その伸びやかな歌声が、バンドに新たな表情を与えている。ジェフ・ウォーターズのギターは、鋭角的なリフと、流麗なリードとを、巧みに使い分けている。 冒頭の表題曲“Set the World on Fire”のキャッチーな推進力、“Bats in the Belfry”の攻撃性、そして“Phoenix Rising”のドラマ性まで、収録曲は、速さだけではない、豊かな曲の表情を作り出している。“No Zone”“Snake in the Grass”のような曲も、作品の魅力を高めている。リズムは、複雑さを抱えつつも、サビへと向かう推進力を、決して失わない。 技巧的な演奏を、あくまで曲全体の流れの中へと溶け込ませ、極端な攻撃性と、聴きやすいフックとの間を、独自のバランスで進んだ、重要な転換点となる一枚だ。より幅広い聴き手を意識した、メロディックな側面が強く出ている。ANNIHILATORの、また別の魅力を示した、充実したメロディック・スラッシュ作品と言える。

Set the World on Fire is an ambitious third album on which Annihilator, while keeping thrash-derived urgency, steps into greater melody and a cleaner, clearer construction. From the sharp, complex style of the first two albums, it steers greatly toward a more melodic, catchy direction. Welcoming the new vocalist Aaron Randall, his soaring voice gives the band a new face. Jeff Waters’s guitar deftly shifts between angular riffs and fluid leads. From the catchy drive of the opening title track “Set the World on Fire” and the aggression of “Bats in the Belfry” to the drama of “Phoenix Rising,” the songs create rich expression beyond speed alone, while cuts like “No Zone” and “Snake in the Grass” heighten the work’s appeal. The rhythm, while holding complexity, never loses the drive toward the chorus. An important turning point that melts technical playing into the whole song’s flow and proceeds between extreme aggression and accessible hooks in its own balance. A melodic side conscious of a wider audience strongly appears. Showing another appeal of Annihilator, it is a fulfilling melodic-thrash work.
