『Remains』は、ANNIHILATORが、従来のスラッシュ的な勢いを残しつつも、打ち込み的なプログラミング・リズムと、冷たくインダストリアルな音色とを、大胆に取り込んだ、極めて異色の作品だ。ジェフ・ウォーターズが、ほぼ一人で制作した本作は、彼のギターは、依然として切れ味鋭いが、曲は、生々しいバンドの一体感よりも、閉じた空間の、張り詰めた緊張を強く強調している。 冒頭“Murder”の攻撃性、そして“Human Remains”のドラマ性まで、収録曲は、機械的なビートと、鋭いギターとが、独特の冷たい質感を作り出している。“No Love”“Sexecution”“Dead Wrong”のような曲も、この時期ならではの、実験的な音楽性を伝えている。90年代後半の、モダン・ヘヴィネスやインダストリアルの空気を、敏感に反映した一枚だ。 方向転換の非常に大きい、実験的な一枚ではあるが、その挑戦的な作風ゆえに、他のアルバムにはない、独特の不穏さと魅力を放っている。ジェフ・ウォーターズの、飽くなき実験精神が、色濃く表れた作品だ。ANNIHILATORのカタログの中でも、特に異色の位置を占める、この別の側面を知るための、興味深い一枚と言える。賛否を呼ぶ意欲作である。

Remains is an extremely unusual work on which Annihilator, while keeping its former thrash momentum, boldly takes in programmed rhythm and cold, industrial timbre. Made almost entirely by Jeff Waters alone, his guitar is sharp as ever, yet the songs strongly emphasize the taut tension of a closed space over the raw unity of a band. From the aggression of the opener “Murder” to the drama of “Human Remains,” the songs create a distinctive cold texture with mechanical beats and sharp guitar, while cuts like “No Love,” “Sexecution” and “Dead Wrong” convey an experimental musicality particular to this period. A record sensitively reflecting the air of late-1990s modern heaviness and industrial. Though a very large, experimental turn, its challenging style gives off a distinctive unease and appeal not found on other albums. A work where Jeff Waters’s tireless experimental spirit strongly appears. Even in Annihilator’s catalog, it occupies a particularly unusual place — an intriguing record for knowing this other side, an ambitious work that drew mixed views.
