『Criteria for a Black Widow』は、ANNIHILATORが、切り刻むような鋭いリフ、急転する劇的な展開、そして緻密なギター・ワークを駆使し、緊張感の極めて高いスラッシュ・メタルを作り上げた作品だ。デビュー作『Alice in Hell』のヴォーカリスト、ランディ・ランページが復帰したことでも、ファンの間で話題となった。曲は、技巧的でありながらも、その重心は、常にヘヴィなグルーヴと、攻撃的な推進力に、しっかりと置かれている。 冒頭“Bloodbath”の攻撃性、表題曲“Criteria for a Black Widow”のドラマ性、そして“Back to the Palace”“Sonic Homicide”のような曲まで、収録曲は、初期の狂気を思わせる、鋭い緊張感に満ちている。デビュー作の続編とも言える“Schizos (Are Never Alone) Part 3”も収録されている。細かなフレーズの応酬と、大きくうねるリズムとの対比が、アルバムを、実に刺激的なものにしている。 初期のクラシックな作風への、原点回帰的な要素も持ちつつ、90年代を経て円熟した、確かな演奏力を示している点が本作の魅力だ。知性と、荒々しさとが、真正面から拮抗する、ANNIHILATORらしい一枚だ。ランページの復帰も相まって、往年のファンを喜ばせた、力強く充実したスラッシュ・メタル作品と言える。緊張感に満ちた一枚だ。

Criteria for a Black Widow is a work on which Annihilator, using sharp chopping riffs, dramatic sudden developments and precise guitar work, builds extremely tense thrash metal. That Randy Rampage, the vocalist of the debut Alice in Hell, returned also drew attention among fans. The songs, while technical, keep their weight firmly on heavy groove and aggressive drive. From the aggression of the opener “Bloodbath” and the drama of the title track “Criteria for a Black Widow” to cuts like “Back to the Palace” and “Sonic Homicide,” the songs are full of a sharp tension evoking the early madness. “Schizos (Are Never Alone) Part 3,” a sequel to the debut, is also included. The contrast of fine phrase exchanges and greatly undulating rhythm makes the album truly exciting. Its appeal is showing sure playing matured through the 1990s while also holding a back-to-origin element toward the early classic style. On which intelligence and roughness contend head-on, it is a record in Annihilator’s manner.
