『Carnival Diablos』は、ジェフ・ウォーターズの、切れ味鋭いリフと、テクニカルなギターを中心に、スラッシュ・メタルの持つ強い推進力を、より多彩で変化に富んだ展開へと広げた作品だ。新ヴォーカリストにジョー・コモウを迎え、その力強い歌声が、バンドに新たな魅力を加えている。複雑で高度な構成を持ちながらも、楽曲は、決して覚えやすいフックを見失うことがない、バランスの取れた作りが特徴である。 冒頭“Denied”の攻撃性、表題曲“Carnival Diablos”のドラマ性、そして“The Perfect Virus”“Battered”“Time Bomb”のような曲まで、収録曲はいずれも聴き応えがある。速い楽曲であっても、確かなグルーヴを残しており、リード・ギターは、単に曲を華やかに飾るだけでなく、その展開そのものを、力強く動かしていく。 高度な演奏技術と、キャッチーな親しみやすさとを、同じ一つの画面の中に、見事に共存させる、ANNIHILATORならではの卓越した手腕が、全編で光っている点が本作の魅力だ。ジェフ・ウォーターズの、作曲家としての才能が、存分に発揮されている。テクニカル・スラッシュの魅力を、高い完成度で味わえる、充実した一枚と言える。多彩な表情を持つ作品だ。

Carnival Diablos is a work on which, around Jeff Waters’s sharply biting riffs and technical guitar, the strong drive of thrash metal is widened into more varied developments. Welcoming the new vocalist Joe Comeau, his powerful voice adds a new appeal to the band. While holding complex, high-level construction, its distinction is a balanced build in which the songs never lose memorable hooks. From the aggression of the opener “Denied” and the drama of the title track “Carnival Diablos” to cuts like “The Perfect Virus,” “Battered” and “Time Bomb,” every song is engaging. Even in fast songs, a sure groove remains, and the lead guitar powerfully moves the very developments, not merely flamboyantly decorating the songs. Its appeal is that Annihilator’s outstanding skill in beautifully coexisting high playing technique and catchy accessibility in one and the same frame shines throughout. Jeff Waters’s talent as a composer is fully displayed. Letting you savor the appeal of technical thrash at high polish, it is a fulfilling record — a work with varied faces.
