『Holy Land』は、ANGRAがパワー・メタルの疾走感にクラシックの壮麗さ、ブラジル音楽のリズム、合唱やアコースティックな色彩を重ねた作品だ。技巧的な演奏は決して見せ場だけに終わらず、アルバム全体の物語性を支えている。ブラジルという自らのルーツを、深く掘り下げた意欲的な第2作である。 “Carolina IV”“Holy Land”“Nothing to Say”といった楽曲では、高音ヴォーカルと流麗なギターが描く華やかさの中に、土地の記憶や文化の混ざり合いを思わせる陰影がある。ブラジルの発見と植民地の歴史をテーマにした、コンセプチュアルな内容も特徴だ。“The Shaman”“Make Believe”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は前作から大きく飛躍しブラジル音楽とメタルの融合という独自の路線を確立しており、“Silence and Distance”“Deep Blue”“Lullaby for Lucifer”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。民族楽器や合唱を大胆に導入した、野心的な傑作である。アンドレ・マトスの歌声が、そのスケールの大きな世界観を見事に表現している。ANGRA固有のアイデンティティを明確にした、スケールの大きい一枚である。

Holy Land is a work on which ANGRA layered the grandeur of classical music, the rhythm of Brazilian music, and choral and acoustic color onto power-metal drive. The technical playing never ends as mere showcase, supporting the whole album’s narrative quality. It is an ambitious second album that deeply dug into their own roots, Brazil. On “Carolina IV,” “Holy Land” and “Nothing to Say,” within the flamboyance drawn by high vocals and flowing guitar, there is a shading evoking the memory of the land and the mixing of cultures. Conceptual content themed on the discovery of Brazil and colonial history is also a feature. Songs like “The Shaman” and “Make Believe” breathe the band’s full playing too. Andre Matos’s voice splendidly expresses that large-scale worldview. It is a large-scale record that clarified ANGRA’s own identity.
