This Darkened Heart

『This Darkened Heart』は、ALL THAT REMAINSが切れ味あるギター・リフ、荒々しいヴォーカル、疾走するリズムをまとめた第2作だ。2004年3月にプロステティックから発表され、キルスウィッチ・エンゲイジのアダム・ドゥトキェヴィッチがプロデュース、ミックス、エンジニアリングを一手に担った。オリ・ハーバートの教え子だったマイク・マーティンがギターで加入し、マット・デイスがベースを弾いている。以後長く続くマーティンとハーバートのツイン・リードが、ここで始まった。 曲はメロディック・デス・メタルの影響を持ちながら、ブレイクダウンの重さとハードコア的な切迫感を強く押し出している。デビュー作と違ってクリーン・ヴォーカルが導入され、のちの路線への橋渡しとなった。若さゆえの鋭さが前面にあり、演奏には整い過ぎない生々しい力がある。冒頭の“And Death in My Arms”や“The Deepest Gray”は初期の代表曲で、締めの表題曲まで密度が落ちない。本作を機にガーやアーチ・エネミー、ダーケスト・アワーらと回り、バンドは一気に知られていく。後のメロディックな広がりへつながる種をすでに含んだ、最初の飛躍を示す一枚である。

This Darkened Heart is the second album, gathering sharp guitar riffs, rough vocals and racing rhythm. Released on Prosthetic in March 2004, with Killswitch Engage's Adam Dutkiewicz single-handedly producing, mixing and engineering. Mike Martin — once Oli Herbert's guitar student — joined on guitar, with Matt Deis on bass. The Martin/Herbert twin-lead partnership that would last for years began here. While the songs carry a melodic death metal influence, they push breakdown weight and hardcore urgency hard to the front. Unlike the debut, clean vocals are introduced, bridging toward their later path. A youthful sharpness is up front, and the playing has a raw force that isn't over-tidied. The opener “And Death in My Arms” and “The Deepest Gray” are early signature songs, and the density doesn't drop through the closing title track. On the back of this record they toured with GWAR, Arch Enemy and Darkest Hour, and the band became widely known fast. Already containing the seeds of their later melodic expansion — the record that marks their first leap.
