『Restless and Wild』は、ACCEPTが鋭く刻むギター、ウド・ダークシュナイダーの粗く荒々しい声、緊張感あるドラムを束ねた第4作だ。曲は硬質だが、単に速いだけではなく、リフの巧みな置き方とコーラスの圧倒的な強さで、強烈な推進力を生み出している。ジャーマン・ヘヴィ・メタルの攻撃性を決定づけた、重要な一枚である。 とりわけ、冒頭を飾る“Fast as a Shark”の凄まじい疾走感は、後のスピード・メタルやスラッシュ・メタルの原型となった、歴史的な楽曲だ。表題曲“Restless and Wild”の勢い、荘厳な大曲“Princess of the Dawn”、そして“Ahead of the Pack”“Neon Nights”まで、アルバムには時代を先取りする衝動がみなぎっている。 荒々しさと、演奏の確かな精度とが、極めて高い次元で同居している点に、本作の凄みがある。単なる攻撃性だけでなく、メロディと構成の妙も兼ね備えている。“Flash Rockin' Man”“Demon's Night”のような曲でも、疾走感と精密な演奏が結び付いている。後続の数多くのメタル・バンドに多大な影響を与えた、ACCEPTのキャリアにおける決定的な転換点となった名盤と言える。

Restless and Wild is the fourth album on which Accept binds sharply chopped guitar, Udo Dirkschneider’s rough, wild voice and tense drums. The songs are hard-edged, yet not merely fast: the deft placement of the riffs and the overwhelming strength of the choruses produce a powerful drive. It is an important record that defined the aggression of German heavy metal. Above all, the ferocious speed of the opener “Fast as a Shark” is a historic song that became an archetype of later speed and thrash metal. From the momentum of the title track “Restless and Wild” and the stately epic “Princess of the Dawn” to “Ahead of the Pack” and “Neon Nights,” an impulse ahead of its time fills the album. The record’s power lies in how roughness and sure playing precision coexist at an extremely high level. Beyond mere aggression, it also holds the deftness of melody and construction.
