Powerage captures AC/DC at its most direct and concentrated. Angus and Malcolm Young do not need elaborate ornament to create momentum; the riffs are short, hard and relentlessly physical, pushing every song forward with a sense of inevitability. Bon Scott gives the material more than swagger. His vocal performances carry humor, exhaustion and appetite in equal measure, adding a lived-in edge to music that might otherwise seem simple on paper. “Rock ’N’ Roll Damnation” opens the record with a broad sense of release, while “Down Payment Blues” moves with heavier feet, “Riff Raff” tightens the pressure, and “Sin City” leans into a stubborn, rolling groove. Cliff Williams’ arrival on bass adds further stability to the low end and reinforces the rhythm section’s straight-ahead drive. Heard as a complete album, Powerage reveals how much power lies in the placement of a riff and in the pause before the next one arrives.
