On October 29, Universal Music Japan announced a Japan-only edition of Ozzy Osbourne & Black Sabbath's Back to the Beginning, out on Friday, December 11. It is a three-disc set: the film of the July 5, 2025 show at Villa Park in Birmingham — Ozzy Osbourne's last stage — on two Blu-rays, HD and 4K UHD, with a CD of that day's Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath sets, at 11,000 yen including tax. Abroad, pre-orders opened on October 28, and the same December 11 brings a CD and Blu-ray edition, a vinyl and Blu-ray edition, store-exclusive splatter vinyl and a digital album. A deluxe box set with three Blu-rays, two CDs and three LPs follows on April 23, 2027.
The Japan-only edition: Japanese subtitles, liner notes, translations and an SHM-CD
The catalogue number is UIXY-75019. Disc one is an HD Blu-ray and disc two a 4K UHD Blu-ray, each carrying the full-length film of the show with Dolby 2.0, Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Atmos sound. Japanese subtitles, liner notes by Masanori Ito and lyrics with Japanese translations for the CD's songs come with it, and the CD is an SHM-CD — all of it only on the Japanese edition.
The bonus features are the full Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath performances, video performances of "Mr. Crowley" sung by Jack Black and "Changes" played by Fred Durst, a behind-the-scenes featurette, video tributes including messages from Dolly Parton, AC/DC and Ricky Gervais, and the documentary Sounds of Birmingham. The video discs hold three and a half hours in all.
The CD, listed in Japan as Live from Villa Park, has fifteen tracks: five songs from Ozzy Osbourne's solo set — "I Don't Know", "Mr. Crowley", "Suicide Solution", "Mama, I'm Coming Home" and "Crazy Train" — and four from Black Sabbath's — "War Pigs", "N.I.B.", "Iron Man" and "Paranoid" — in the order of the day, with the introductions and stage talk between them.
The first-come bonus at record shops, online stores and the Universal Music Store alike is a 30 cm square poster of the cover art. Some shops do not carry it, so it is worth checking where you buy.
The imports: CD and Blu-ray, vinyl and Blu-ray, and store-exclusive splatter vinyl
The imports come from Mercury Studios. Pre-orders have been up at the official Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne stores since October 28, with a CD and two Blu-rays, 4K UHD and HD, at $39.98, and a gatefold set of two half-speed-mastered 140g black LPs with the same two Blu-rays at $64.98. The film runs 146 minutes on Blu-ray, with the same bonus features as the Japanese edition.
The limited vinyl differs from store to store: purple and black splatter only at the official Black Sabbath store, silver and black splatter only at the official Ozzy Osbourne store, each a double LP with the two Blu-rays at $69.98. The release announcement adds a metallic vinyl for specialty and independent shops. The digital album also arrives on December 11.
The vinyl is import-only, with no Japanese pressing of it.
A deluxe box on April 23, 2027: a 35-song Blu-ray and nine covers
The deluxe box set, on pre-order since October 28 at $389.99, is out on April 23, 2027. It has three Blu-rays: the film in 4K UHD and HD, plus an HD Blu-ray of all 35 songs of the day — the Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath sets and the special guests' covers of their songs — in concert running order. It has two CDs, one of the Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath sets and one of nine covers by special guests, and three 180g black LPs: Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath and the nine covers.
It also holds a 72-page hardback book of interviews and photographs from the day, with organiser Sharon Osbourne, musical director Tom Morello, Andy Copping of Live Nation and production manager Jake Berry among those interviewed, an Ozzy Osbourne pendant necklace, a numbered certificate and a film poster art print. The official Ozzy Osbourne store limits it to four per customer. The 35-song Blu-ray and the covers on CD and vinyl are on neither the Japanese edition nor the December 11 imports.
In Japanese cinemas until November 13
The film is still in Japanese cinemas. One-night Halloween screenings play four theatres in Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya and Osaka on Saturday, October 31; a national screening marks the forty-fifth anniversary of Diary of a Madman on Saturday, November 7; and the screening of Friday, November 13 is the last, with Masanori Ito on stage at the Osaka screening. Tickets for November 7 and November 13 have been on general sale since 18:00 on October 25.
The screenings are set out in our feature of September 29.
