LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Sodom's sixth studio album is the first full-length with Atomic Steif on drums, alongside Tom Angelripper on bass and vocals and Andy Brings on guitar. Wolfgang Stach, who had worked with the band on the Aber bitte mit Sahne! EP the year before, produced it with them and engineered the recording at T&T Studio. In 2025 Angelripper described the aim as a return to the band's roots, naming Venom and Motörhead, with short songs that go straight at the listener, and said that Brings's punk background came through more strongly than before.
Brings has recalled that at the time many bands wanted the clean, technically flawless sound of Pantera or Machine Head and that Sodom chose not to follow, adding that nothing in the sound or the lyrics was meant to be agreeable. "Sodomized" was the first song the new line-up wrote, and a different recording of it had already appeared on the EP. "Die Stumme Ursel" and "Erwachet!" are sung in German, "Tribute to Moby Dick" is an instrumental, and Brings wrote the words to "Jesus Screamer", "Eat Me" and "Erwachet!", Angelripper the rest. The album closes with "Angel Dust", a Venom song.
Steamhammer (SPV) released it in January 1994 on CD, LP and cassette. It entered the German album chart at 80 on 14 February, reached 45 on 28 February and stayed for nine weeks. Besides the original hotel-room sleeve there was a censored version showing the band, and the artwork first planned for the record was a painting by Andreas Marschall called "Knarrenheinz". On 27 February 2026 BMG reissued the album, remastered and newly mixed by Brings, together with the EP and live recordings, and it went to number 5 in Germany. In Japan, Marquee Inc. followed on 24 June 2026 with a twenty-track SHM-CD on its Avalon label, MICP-30232, which adds the EP's four songs.
