Dante XXI came out on 14 March 2006 on SPV, on BMG in Brazil, with Victor issuing the Japanese edition on 24 April as VICP-63397. It was recorded through 2005 at Estúdios Trama in São Paulo and produced by André Moraes, the band and Stanley Soares.
It is built on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, and the three parts of the poem — hell, purgatory and paradise — shape the running order. The sleeve and booklet carry ten paintings the band commissioned from Stephan Doitschinoff after the epic.
It is also the last album on which the founding drummer Igor Cavalera plays. Derrick Green sings, Andreas Kisser plays guitar and Paulo Jr. plays bass.
The video for the first single, "Convicted in Life", won an editing award at the Brazilian MTV awards in 2006. The album reached number eight on the British rock and metal chart, sixty-four in Germany and forty-five on the American independent albums chart, and was certified gold in Brazil and in Cyprus.
Fifteen tracks; the running order here is that of the standard SPV pressing, SPV 99812 CD.
