The Spiritual Backbone of Nordic Metal

From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, the Scandinavian Peninsula began to attract global attention as a new epicenter for Heavy Metal. While Norway was engulfed in the flames of Black Metal and Sweden roared with the heavy riffs of Death Metal, Finland was also cultivating its own unique, more melancholic and lyrical sound. During the dawn of this Finnish metal scene, SENTENCED emerged from Muhos, a small town near the northern city of Oulu. They transcended the boundaries of a mere band, becoming an entity that embodied the very psyche of the Nordic people.

SENTENCED's musical journey shifted dramatically and fluidly from their early ferocious and technical death metal, to a mid-period "Death 'n' Roll" that incorporated rock 'n' roll grooves, and finally to their late-era Gothic Metal filled with despair and melancholy. However, at its core, the "wailing" guitar melodies played by Miika Tenkula and the gloomy lyrical world penned by Sami Lopakka—revolving around themes of "death," "suicide," and "loss"—flowed consistently throughout.

In 2005, while at the peak of their popularity and creativity, the band chose to disband by holding "their own funeral." This was not a collapse brought on by commercial decline or interpersonal discord among members, but rather a "band-level self-termination" based on their own aesthetic principles.

Chapter 1: Stirrings in the Far North — Formation and Leanings Toward Death Metal (1988-1991)

1.1 The Predecessor Band "Deformity" and the Birth of Sentenced

The story of SENTENCED originates from a band named Deformity, formed in 1988 in Muhos, located in Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland. The members at the time were still teenagers who picked up instruments inspired by Slayer and early death metal bands.

This early line-up consisted of the members who would form the core of the later SENTENCED:

• Miika Tenkula: Lead Guitar and Vocals
• Sami Lopakka: Guitar
• Vesa Ranta: Drums
• Lari Kylmänen: Bass

They changed their band name to SENTENCED in 1989. This name, meaning "having received a verdict," could be said to have already implied the fatalistic and pessimistic themes they would pursue later on. After the name change, there was a brief period when drummer Tuure Heikkilä was in the band, but Vesa Ranta soon established his place, laying the foundation for the golden era line-up.

1.2 Production of Early Demo Tapes and Rise in the Underground

Shortly after their formation, the band vigorously set about producing demos and threw themselves into the then-thriving tape-trading scene.

• 1. "When Death Joins Us..." (1990)
  This was SENTENCED's first demo tape, recording the band's raw impulses. This demo immediately garnered attention in the death metal scene at the time and became the decisive factor in SENTENCED securing their first record deal.
• 2. "Rotting Ways to Misery" (1991)
  Their second demo tape. By this point, the band's songwriting abilities had improved dramatically, showing the budding seeds of their later technical style, including complex riff structures and tempo changes.

It is particularly noteworthy that right after releasing their first demo tape, "When Death Joins Us...", SENTENCED signed a contract with the French label Thrash Records. In the pre-Internet era, it was an exceptional feat for a band from rural Finland to secure an overseas label deal with just a single demo tape, illustrating the immensely high potential of SENTENCED's music.

1.3 Departure of Lari Kylmänen and Joining of Taneli Jarva

In 1991, just before recording their debut album, bassist Lari Kylmänen left the band. Taneli Jarva joined as his replacement.

Taneli Jarva's joining was a fateful turning point for the band. Although he initially joined as a bassist, his wild appearance, charisma, and unique vocal style—which would blossom later—acted as a catalyst that elevated SENTENCED from just a "proficient death metal band" to an "artistic collective" with its own distinct aesthetic.

Chapter 2: Glory and Deepening of the Death Metal Era (1991-1993)

2.1 "Shadows of the Past" (1991) — A Dark Debut

In November 1991, SENTENCED released their debut album "Shadows of the Past" through France's Thrash Records.

• Musicality: The musical style of this album is fast and ferocious, typical European Death Metal. While the song structures are relatively straightforward, a chilly Nordic melody peeks through here and there.
• Vocals: At this point, lead guitarist Miika Tenkula also handled vocals. His vocal style consisted of deep, brutal growls that emphasized the aggressiveness of the tracks, but it simultaneously presented a challenge, placing restrictions on live performances due to doubling as a guitarist.
• Evaluation: With this album, SENTENCED became recognized alongside other Finnish extreme metal bands such as Amorphis, Convulse, Funebre, and Demigod.

Following the album's release, the band recorded the promo tape "Journey to Pohjola" in 1992. "Pohjola" refers to the "Northern Land" in Finnish mythology, indicating that SENTENCED's identity was beginning to ground itself more deeply in their own country's culture and myths. The high quality of this tape became the deciding factor, earning the band a contract with Spinefarm Records, a prominent Finnish label. By this point, SENTENCED had already performed over 50 live shows and completely sold out 1,500 copies of their debut album, establishing a solid fan base.

2.2 "North from Here" (1993) — Technical Innovation from the "North"

In June 1993, their second album "North from Here" was released by Spinefarm. This work was the first and extremely critical "metamorphosis" in the band's career.

• Change in Vocals: The biggest change was the vocals. Miika Tenkula stepped down from vocal duties to focus on increasingly complex guitar work, and bassist Taneli Jarva took over as lead vocalist. Taneli's voice went beyond mere low-pitched roars; it was a thick, powerful scream capable of expressing emotional ups and downs, giving the sound a human-like madness and depth.
• Musical Evolution: Breaking away from the straight-ahead death metal of the previous work, the music evolved into "Technical Melodic Death Metal" with highly technical and intricate structures. Odd time signatures and abrupt tempo changes were frequently utilized, and while it bore the influence of American technical death metal acts like Atheist and Death, the melodies remained entirely Nordic.
• Lyrical Themes: Evolution was also evident in the lyrics. Moving away from typical gore and horror themes, they shifted toward Finnish military history (with depictions reminiscent of the Winter War), the epic poem "Kalevala," the harsh nature of the far north, and spiritual devastation.

"North from Here" is still highly praised today as a historical masterpiece of melodic death metal and as one of the archetypes of the "Finnish sound." It captures an unrepeatable moment where Miika Tenkula's genius riff work merged with Taneli Jarva's passionate vocals.

2.3 "The Trooper" EP (1993) — Return to Melody

In the same year, the band released the EP "The Trooper". The title track is a cover of Iron Maiden's classic song "The Trooper". A death metal band covering a NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) classic showed respect for the traditional heavy metal at SENTENCED's roots, while also foreshadowing the coming change in musical direction—a more melodic and catchy path. This marked their final release through Spinefarm.

Chapter 3: Transition Period and Approach to "Death 'n' Roll" (1994-1996)

3.1 Contract with Century Media and "Amok" (1995)

In 1994, SENTENCED signed a worldwide contract with Century Media, a major German metal label. This was an important step for the band to leap from a local cult band to a global metal act.

Released on January 3, 1995, their third album "Amok" became SENTENCED's biggest breakthrough album, while simultaneously sparking much debate as a controversial work.

• Style Change: The labyrinthine arrangements seen in "North from Here" faded into the background, giving way to a dramatic shift toward a mid-tempo, groovy style often described as "Dark Metal" or "Death 'n' Roll." It blended Black Sabbath-esque heaviness with the vibrancy of rock 'n' roll.
• Tracks: The signature track "Nepenthe" epitomizes this change. A music video was produced, and the band performing amid a bleak, snow-covered landscape visually defined SENTENCED's decadent and melancholic worldview. Additionally, tracks like "The War Ain't Over!" and "Dance on the Graves (Lil' Siztah)" saw a coexistence of catchy hooks and aggressiveness.`
• Success: The album sold over 35,000 copies worldwide, rapidly boosting the band's profile. For many fans, "Amok" remains remembered as SENTENCED's masterpiece, as well as the beginning of the end of their death metal era.

3.2 "Love & Death" (1995) and the Departure of Taneli Jarva

Following the success of "Amok," the band released the EP "Love & Death" in the same year. Here, they covered Billy Idol's "White Wedding," showing a closer approach to Gothic Rock with more melodic and experimental elements.

However, just as the band was heading toward its commercial and artistic zenith, a shock wave hit fans and the music industry. Frontman Taneli Jarva left the band.

• Reason for Departure: According to official announcements at the time and subsequent interviews, Taneli cited that "the band's success grew too large, becoming a burden" and "differences in musical direction." More specifically, there was friction in interpersonal relationships within the band and exhaustion from endless touring life. He emphasized, "I wasn't kicked out of the band; I left of my own accord," as he sought a place where he could more freely pursue his own creativity.
• Aftermath: After his departure, Taneli broke his silence after some time to form The Black League, developing a dirtier and more rock 'n' roll-oriented musical style.

Chapter 4: The Joining of Ville Laihiala and Transformation into Gothic Metal (1996-1999)

4.1 Unearthing the New Vocalist, Ville Laihiala

Having lost a powerful personality like Taneli Jarva, the band faced a crisis of survival. Furthermore, the recording for their next album at Woodhouse Studio in Germany was already booked, leaving them no time to spare.

The band desperately held auditions. Discovered among them was Ville Laihiala, who was active in a band called Breed at the time. Unlike Taneli's thick roars, his voice possessed a rough, masculine, low-to-mid-range singing style reminiscent of James Hetfield (Metallica).

4.2 "Down" (1996) — Full Transition to Gothic

In November 1996, the 4th album "Down," featuring the new line-up, was released. This title, "Down," symbolized the band's mental state, musical tuning, and thematic direction.

• Dramatic Change: On this album, SENTENCED almost completely eliminated death metal elements (growling and blast beats) and pivoted entirely toward melancholic heavy rock, namely Gothic Metal.
• Ville's Contribution: Right after joining, Ville Laihiala's vocals were still finding his own style in some parts, but he delivered powerful performances on tracks like "Noose" and "Bleed." His vocal timbre was better suited for melodic songs.
• Guest Appearance: Vorph from Samael participated as a backing vocalist, adding an ominous atmosphere to the album. Additionally, a session member participated as the bassist, but after the tour, Sami Kukkohovi joined as a permanent member, completing the final line-up.
• Evaluation: Initially, this abrupt change in style drew fierce backlash from old-school fans, who slammed it as "selling out" or "a betrayal of death metal." However, the high quality of the songwriting was undeniable, resulting in hits like "Noose" and successfully capturing a new fan base.

4.3 "Frozen" (1998) — The Aesthetic of Suicide and Despair

With their 5th album "Frozen," released in 1998, SENTENCED's music became more introspective and depressed, establishing the aesthetic of "Suicide Metal" that would become the band's public image.

• Themes: What penetrated the entire album was a thorough exploration of "suicide," "despair," and "emptiness." As symbolized by song titles like "The Suicider" and "Excuse Me While I Kill Myself" (which was included on a later album, but the thematic continuity was already established), the long, dark Nordic winter and the inescapable mental stagnation were etched into the sound.
• Sami Lopakka's Lyrics: The lyrics written by guitarist Sami Lopakka possessed a literary quality that struck a perfect balance between cynical black humor and deep sorrow, setting them apart from mere depressing music.
• Tracks: Fast-paced tracks disappeared, and the album centered on mid-tempo songs that progressed flatly yet emotionally. Songs like "Farewell" and "The Rain Comes Falling Down" became live staples.

Chapter 5: Golden Era and Commercial Success (2000-2004)

5.1 "Crimson" (2000) — The Pinnacle of Melancholy

With their 6th album "Crimson," released in January 2000, the band reached the pinnacle of their melodic sensibility. The album artwork also shifted from dark tones to a striking, vivid crimson.

• Establishing Catchiness: This album demonstrated the definitive form of Gothic Rock. "Killing Me Killing You" was a sad and beautiful ballad that incorporated piano; its music video was frequently broadcast, making it one of the band's signature tracks.
• Diversity: The emotional range is wide, spanning from heavy, oppressive tracks like "Bleed in My Arms" to delicate ones like "Fragile." Ville Laihiala's vocals also evolved beyond mere roughness into a style that truly sings out.
• Chart Performance: This album reached number 1 on the Finnish national chart, cementing the band's immense domestic popularity.

5.2 "The Cold White Light" (2002) — The Cold White Light

Released in May 2002, the 7th album "The Cold White Light" became a monumental work, certified as the band's first gold record in Finland.

• Production: The production quality improved dramatically, with the guitar tones becoming cold and crystal clear, and the rhythm section growing tighter.
• Sound: Though the lyrics still dealt with suicide and death (such as "Excuse Me While I Kill Myself"), musically it showed an increase in a certain lightheartedness and rock dynamism, as seen in "Neverlasting." This could be interpreted as an expression of SENTENCED's unique nihilism—a sort of "having no choice but to laugh in utter despair."
• Lyrics: The lyrics were more ironic, reaching a state beyond self-pity. The album's structure, opening with the instrumental track "Konevitsan kirkonkellot" (The Church Bells of Konevitsa), was also memorable.

Chapter 6: A Self-Chosen End — The Aesthetic of Funeral (2005)

6.1 The Decision to Disband

In early 2005, SENTENCED made a shocking announcement through their official website and a press release: "The next album will be our last. The band is disbanding."

The band was at the peak of their popularity and enjoying commercial success. However, SENTENCED hated nothing more than "continuing out of inertia." "Extinguishing the curtain by our own hands before the creative fire burns out"—it was a decision akin to a sort of "suicide" on a band level, meant to preserve their dignity.

6.2 "The Funeral Album" — An Album as a Last Will and Testament

In May 2005, the final album "The Funeral Album" was released. True to its name, this is a concept album revolving around the band's "death" and "funeral."

Concept: From the intro "May Today Become the Day" to the outro "End of the Road," a journey into death, farewell, and the return to nothingness are consistently depicted.

• "Ever-Frost": A classic track released as a single, which topped the Finnish charts for six consecutive weeks. It blends a punk spirit and melancholy, singing "We spit on your grave" over a catchy melody.
• "Vengeance Is Mine": A fast track that unleashes fierce rage.
• "Despair-Ridden Hearts": A lyrical track incorporating a harmonica (mouth harp), overlaying the wilderness of a Western movie with the northern wilderness.
• "End of the Road": A moving final track serving as a farewell greeting from the band to the fans, coldly yet gently pushing them away with "The funeral is over, go home."

• Artwork: The cover art depicts a tombstone engraved with the band's logo, with a withered bouquet offered before it.
• Success: This album debuted at number 1 on the Finnish chart and was certified gold.

6.3 "Buried Alive" — The Night They Were Buried Alive

The band embarked on their final "Funeral Tour," traveling to various festivals and clubs across Europe. Then, on October 1, 2005, their true final live show was held at Club Teatria in SENTENCED's hometown of Oulu.

This live performance was released in 2006 as a DVD and CD under the title "Buried Alive."

• Setlist: A setlist was put together spanning their entire career, from early tracks of the death metal era to their latest work.
• Surprise: The biggest surprise was when former frontman Taneli Jarva appeared on stage as a guest. He took over from Ville Laihiala to sing tracks from his era, including "The War Ain't Over!", "Nepenthe," and "Northern Lights." The sight of the old and new vocalists celebrating the band's history on the same stage brought fans in the venue to tears.
• Conclusion: At the end of the encore, the band members put down their instruments one by one and left the stage. Finally, Miika Tenkula left behind the guitar feedback noise and departed; like a candle blowing out, the history of SENTENCED drew its curtain.

Chapter 7: Post-Mortem, and into Legend (2006-Present)

7.1 The Death of Miika Tenkula

On February 18, 2009, about three and a half years after the disbandment, guitarist Miika Tenkula—the band's main songwriter and its very soul—was found dead at his home in Muhos. He was only 34 years old.

• Cause of Death: It was announced as a sudden heart attack caused by a hereditary heart condition.
• Shock and Mourning: With his death, any possibility of a SENTENCED reunion was physically and eternally lost. On the official website, the former members issued a joint statement mourning him: "A dear friend, a truly remarkable artist, and the very soul of what used to be SENTENCED. Rest now, brother—in your music and our hearts you will live forever."
• Legacy: Many successor bands composed tribute songs dedicated to him, such as Insomnium's track "Weighed Down with Sorrow." The uniquely sorrowful guitar solos he played are still passed down as the "sound of Finland" today.

SENTENCED was a pioneer that cultivated the ground for Finnish heavy metal acts like HIM, Children of Bodom, and Nightwish to achieve global success. However, SENTENCED themselves remained true to their own aesthetics—expressing "Nordic melancholy"—rather than seeking commercial success itself.

Even as their style changed from death metal to gothic metal, the "darkness of the soul" at their core never shifted. And their decision to disband the band as if taking their own lives at their most beautiful moment became a legend in the metal scene as the grand finale of SENTENCED's expressive activities.

Miika Tenkula is no longer here. However, the melodies he left behind continue to echo eternally in the freezing Nordic winds and within the hearts of fans worldwide.
