Amok

Amok is Sentenced's third album, on which they deepened their own aesthetic by layering gothic shading and sorrow onto death metal's aggression. Carrying over the craft of its predecessor, it takes in traditional heavy metal, doom and gothic-rock elements, bridging toward their later style. For Taneli Jarva, it became his last album with the band. It was one of their earliest albums after signing with Century Media in pursuit of a wider market. It was followed by the more rock-leaning mini-album Love & Death. Heavy, lyrical songs like "The War Ain't Over," "Nepenthe" and "Funeral Spring" line up. While keeping death metal's rawness, the weight of melody steadily increases. It is regarded as the band's first major leap. After this, Jarva left to focus on Impaled Nazarene. A turning-point record marking the end of an era. Alongside Amorphis and Waltari, Sentenced helped lay the foundation of the Finnish metal boom, paving the way for later bands like Children of Bodom and Nightwish.
