Liner Notes
In Trance is the third album on which Scorpions step back from the long progressive development of their early days toward shorter, sharper hard rock. Uli Jon Roth’s guitar keeps a classical fluency while giving the songs strong tension in both riffs and solos, and Klaus Meine’s singing grows in presence as the axis that carries the melody forward.
From the shading of the title track “In Trance” and the strength of “Dark Lady” to the drive of “Top of the Bill” and the heat of “Sun in My Hand,” the songs convey the band’s clear evolution. It steers plainly toward valuing the polish and hooks of songs over long improvisation. As Roth’s distinctive guitar joins Meine’s soaring voice, the strong melodic sense that would carry into later Scorpions begins to bud. While some rawness remains, it captures the moment the band grasped its own style — an important record and a major turning point for early Scorpions that hints at the worldwide success to come.
