Liner Notes

Fly to the Rainbow finds Scorpions before its later, streamlined heavy-metal identity, using Uli Jon Roth’s fluid guitar to blend psychedelic space, blues, and hard rock with unusual freedom. Klaus Meine’s voice already has its recognizable clarity, and Rudolf Schenker’s riffs give the songs a firm structure, but Roth’s solos often fly beyond that foundation and open the music into dreamlike territory. The cutting attack of “Speedy’s Coming” reveals the band’s direct rock power, while the extended title track reflects a young group unwilling to be satisfied by short hooks alone. “Drifting Sun” and “Far Away” use guitar tone and melody to paint scenery, creating a sense of suspension very different from riff-centered hard rock. The record is uneven in places, but that unevenness is part of its appeal: it lets listeners hear Scorpions testing possibilities while searching for its own language. Anyone expecting the clear formula of the Lovedrive era may be surprised, yet this album has a free, exploratory scent unique to the group’s 1970s work. Where weight, lyricism, and improvisational instinct meet, Fly to the Rainbow becomes one of the band’s most adventurous and dreamlike records.
