Biography
HANABIE. is a four-piece all-female loud-rock band from Tokyo featuring Yukina on vocals, Matsuri on guitar and vocals, Hettsu on bass and backing vocals, and Chika on drums. Formed in June 2015 in a high-school light music club, the group began as a Maximum the Hormone cover band. Its original style combines metalcore and hardcore with electronics, J-pop, hip-hop, anime, games and the fashion and subcultures associated with Harajuku and Akihabara. HANABIE. calls this hybrid “Harajuku-core.” Yukina’s extreme screams, Matsuri’s clear melodic voice, Hettsu’s animated low end and Chika’s powerful precision allow sudden genre changes to feel like one continuous live performance.
The first mini-album, Cherry Blossoms Are Blooming, arrived in 2018 after the band had developed through Tokyo’s live-house circuit. The 2021 full-length Girl’s Reform Manifest established a more recognizable identity. Songs such as “SUNRISE MISO-SOUP,” “We love sweets” and “L.C.G” turned everyday subjects—breakfast, a sweet tooth, gyaru culture and dating apps—into heavy music without losing their humor or immediacy. Harsh vocals, pop melody, electronic sound and conversational language were no longer separate ingredients; they became the band’s basic grammar.
Chika joined in 2023, and HANABIE. made its major-label debut through Epic Records Japan with Reborn Superstar! Tracks including “Pardon Me, I Have To Go Now,” “TOUSOU” and “NEET GAME” expanded the band’s overseas audience. European, North American and Asian touring followed, together with appearances at major events including Download Festival, Rock am Ring and Aftershock. A main-stage performance at Lollapalooza in 2024 further confirmed the group’s international growth and its position as one of the most visible Japanese all-female heavy bands of its generation.
The 2024 EP Bucchigiri Tokyo brought Tokyo identity, otaku culture, transformation-heroine imagery and contemporary romance further into the foreground. After the 2025 single “Spicy Queen,” the EP HOT TOPIC was released in January 2026. Songs such as “ICONIC” and “GIRL’S TALK” condense the confidence gained from global touring while preserving Harajuku color, humor and self-affirmation. By treating heaviness and cuteness, chaos and catchiness as simultaneous forces rather than opposing choices, HANABIE. continues to reshape how contemporary Japanese metalcore can communicate with the world.
