LINER NOTES
LANGUAGE
Sail Away, Great White's seventh studio album, was released by Zoo Entertainment in May 1994. Zoo was a BMG-distributed label, and BMG Music manufactured and distributed the record. It was recorded in February 1994 at Total Access Recording Studios, with Alan Niven and Michael Lardie again producing and arranging. Jack Russell, Mark Kendall, Lardie and Audie Desbrow were joined by Teddy Cook on bass, guitar and harmony vocals, and Niven played 12-string electric guitar and percussion. The album opens with "A Short Overture", which lasts less than a minute, and Cook shares the writing of "Mother's Eyes" and "Momma Don't Stop". Clarence Clemons plays saxophone on "Gone with the Wind" and Suzie Katayama adds cello, while Lardie's parts include electric sitar and banjo as well as guitar and keyboards. The title song was a single: it reached number nine on Billboard's rock chart in August 1994 and stayed on that chart for 16 weeks. The US release came as two CDs. The second, Anaheim Live, holds seven songs recorded by the Westwood One mobile unit at the Celebrity Theatre in Anaheim on 24 July 1993, among them the Hot 100 hits "Call It Rock N' Roll", "Rock Me" and "Once Bitten Twice Shy" and a version of "Babe (I'm Gonna Leave You)"; that disc alone carries a Capitol Records copyright. Sail Away entered the Billboard 200 at 168 on the chart dated 28 May 1994 and stayed for one week. In Japan, BMG Victor released two editions on 24 August 1994: a special package whose live disc adds "Cold Hearted Lovin'" and "Mista Bone" for nine songs, and a single-disc edition. Stage, which the band lists among its live albums, also draws on its 1993 concert at the Celebrity Theatre in Anaheim.
