Psycho City, Great White's sixth studio album, was released by Capitol Records in 1992. Alan Niven and Michael Lardie produced and arranged it, as they had Hooked, and it was recorded between February and June 1992 at Perkin's Ranch in Santa Ynez, California, and in Redondo Beach at The Great White Rehearsal Studio and Total Access Recording. Jack Russell, Mark Kendall, Lardie and Audie Desbrow were joined by Dave Spitz on bass, with Richie Gajate-Garcia adding percussion, and George Marino mastered the album at Sterling Sound.
Five of the ten songs run past six minutes, the title track, "Old Rose Motel", "Maybe Someday", "Doctor Me" and the longest, the 8:15 "Love Is a Lie", and Niven shares the writing credit on all ten. Billboard reviewed the album in its 10 October 1992 issue. It heard a band known for a direct, no-frills style trying new things: the single "Big Goodbye" was the familiar hard-hitting sound, while "Old Rose Motel", "Maybe Someday" and "Doctor Me" showed darker ambitions the band had not shown before, and the reviewer called it Great White's best album.
Psycho City entered the Billboard 200 at number 107 on the chart dated 10 October 1992 and stayed for six weeks. "Big Goodbye" reached 20 on Billboard's rock chart, and "Old Rose Motel" climbed to 23 in February 1993. Pony Canyon released the Japanese edition on 21 October 1992 with an eleventh track, Darby Slick's "Somebody to Love". Capitol followed with the compilation The Best of Great White 1986-1992, released on 2 November 1993 and certified gold by the RIAA on 15 December 2015.
