The exceptional skills of the pivotal guitarist Syu and the overwhelming vocal abilities of successive vocalists have garnered enthusiastic support not only domestically but also from the global metal community. In particular, GALNERYUS's discography, often described as "melancholic beautiful melodies," goes beyond the simple pursuit of shredding and loud volumes, possessing a dramatic structural beauty (dramatism) that stirs the emotions of listeners. This also became a factor for GALNERYUS to connect with popular culture, such as the anime "HUNTER x HUNTER" and "RAINBOW", acquiring a fanbase that transcends genre boundaries.

2. The Formative Years: Formation and the Stirrings of the Indies Era (2001-2002)

2.1 Fateful Encounter and the Background of Formation

The history of GALNERYUS began in Osaka in 2001. At that time, Syu, who was active as the guitarist for the visual kei heavy metal band Valkyr, was exploring a project where he could more purely pursue his musical roots: "Kusamelo" (melodic metal with a touch of pathos) and "shred guitar." Syu had showcased his talent through activities in bands like Animetal and Aushvitz (later SPINALCORD), but what he truly sought was a symphonic and progressive power metal influenced by bands such as Stratovarius, Dream Theater, and X JAPAN.

To realize this vision, the presence of a powerful vocalist was indispensable. Syu encountered Masahiro "Yama-B" Yamaguchi, a vocalist active in bands like Gunbridge, Rekion, and River End. Triggered by Syu's guest appearance on a radio program hosted by Yama-B, the two hit it off. Following studio sessions, the band was formed as Syu fell in love with Yama-B's robust high-toned vocals and near-perfect English pronunciation.

The band name "GALNERYUS" is derived from the legendary violin maker Guarneri. Syu himself had a background in studying the violin during his childhood, and the name embodies the wish to be a band like "an instrument that plays the finest tones." The spelling was intentionally coined to enhance uniqueness in internet searches.

2.2 Impact on the Indies Scene

At the time of formation, the only official members were Syu and Yama-B, with the rhythm section and keyboards comprised of support members. The musicians involved during this period include the following individuals:

In October 2001, GALNERYUS released their self-produced demo single "United Flag." This demo tape instantly became a hot topic in the underground metal scene at the time, and its high quality reached the ears of industry insiders. Of particular note was the encounter with producer Yorimasa Hisatake. Known for producing acts like Animetal, Hisatake recognized GALNERYUS's potential and decided to strongly back the band. It is no exaggeration to say that without this meeting, GALNERYUS's subsequent breakthrough would not have been possible.

On August 23, 2002, they released the single "Rebel Flag" from the indies label Iron Shock. The title track "Rebel Flag," featuring galloping double-bass drumming, classical guitar phrases, and Yama-B's powerful vocals, satisfied the cravings of Japanese metal fans at the time. In the same year, they participated in the compilation album "Stand Proud! III" with a cover of Stratovarius's "Black Diamond," and covered "Soldier of Fortune" on the LOUDNESS tribute album "Japanese Heavy Metal Tribute Tamashii II," leaping into the center of the scene with unprecedented momentum for a newcomer.

3. The First Period: The Yama-B Era and Establishment in the Major Scene (2003-2008)

3.1 Completion of the Solid Lineup and Major Debut

In preparation for their major debut, the band transitioned from a support system to an official band lineup. In 2003, the following members officially joined, completing the golden lineup of early GALNERYUS:

• Keyboards: Yuhki - A wizard of the keyboards known for his activities in Ark Storm and Alhambra. His addition brought a more symphonic and progressive depth to the band's sound.
• Drums: Jun-ichi Satoh - Became the backbone of the band with his stable rhythm keeping and powerful drumming.
• Bass: Ryosuke "Tsui" Matsui - Supported Syu's freewheeling guitar work with his solid playing.

Produced by this five-member lineup, the major debut album "The Flag of Punishment" was released by VAP on October 22, 2003. For the artwork of this album, Yoshitaka Amano, an illustrator globally renowned for his character designs in the "Final Fantasy" series, was recruited. It was highly unusual for Amano to be chosen for a newcomer band's debut work, reflecting the label's high expectations. The album's content re-recorded and reconstructed representative songs from the indies era, such as "Struggle for the Freedom Flag" and "United Flag," and was highly praised as a masterpiece that sublimated the stylistic beauty of neoclassical metal with Japanese sensibility.

3.2 Evolution and Deepening Musicality

In March 2005, they released their second album, "Advance to the Fall." In this work, Yuhki's involvement in songwriting increased, and the contrapuntal intertwining of keyboards and guitar became prominent, particularly in tracks like "Silent Revelation." Yama-B's vocal style also grew more expressive, adding depth to the mid-to-low register rather than relying solely on high tones.

Following that, in July 2006, they released their third album, "Beyond the End of Despair...". This too featured cover art by Yoshitaka Amano, serving as a heavy and profound work that concluded the early trilogy. Around this time, the band released their first live DVD, "Live for Rebirth," proving the high reproducibility of their studio works and their high energy as a live band.

3.3 Member Changes and Trials of the Transition Period

Although their activities seemed smooth, bassist Tsui departed after the conclusion of the "Live for Rebirth" tour in 2006. Joining as his successor was a young, then-largely unknown bassist, Yu-To. Yu-To would later change his name to Leda and achieve global fame as a support guitarist for the visual kei metal band DELUHI and BABYMETAL, but at the time, he supported GALNERYUS's rhythm section as a bassist.

The band, under the new lineup, released their fourth album "One for All - All for One" in August 2007. This album saw experimental approaches, such as the full-scale introduction of Japanese lyrics for the first time and tracks featuring Syu himself on lead vocals. While this evidenced the band's quest to reach a broader audience, it simultaneously triggered a divergence in direction between the members and fans who supported their traditional musical style.

In 2008, the biggest shock hit the band. Yama-B, a founding member who possessed the band's iconic voice, announced his departure due to "musical differences." It is said that while the band aimed for a "more catchy and pop-like progression centered on Japanese lyrics," he held a strong commitment to "Western-style orthodox heavy metal," which was his root. The fifth album "Reincarnation," the last to feature Yama-B, was released in September 2008. Produced in close collaboration with producer Yorimasa Hisatake, this album boasted a level of perfection worthy of being Yama-B's culmination, but he left the band following the "Back to the Flag" tour after its release. Furthermore, in the following year of 2009, bassist Yu-To also departed, pushing the band into a critical, near-hiatus situation with only three members remaining: Syu, Yuhki, and Jun-ichi.

4. The Second Period: Resurrection and the Arrival of the Golden Age (2009-2016)

4.1 The "Shock" of Masatoshi Ono

The search for a new vocalist, with the band's survival on the line, faced extreme difficulties. It seemed as though no one in the Japanese metal scene could succeed the predecessor Yama-B, who possessed an overwhelming individuality and ability. Breaking this deadlock was a proposal from producer Hisatake. He recommended Masatoshi Ono, a pop singer who achieved a million-selling hit with "You're the Only..." in 1992 and had performed on the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen.

Syu was initially skeptical about a pop star like Masatoshi Ono joining a heavy metal band. However, during a studio rehearsal, when he witnessed Ono singing his past hit song in its original key with overwhelming volume and high tones, he immediately requested him to join. Around the same time, Taka, a highly technical bassist known for numerous session works, was also confirmed to join. Thus, the new GALNERYUS was born, boasting "one of Japan's finest high-tone vocalists" and a "solid instrumental section."

4.2 From "Resurrection" to "Angel of Salvation"

Following a vivid debut at "LOUD PARK 09" in 2009, they released their 6th album "Resurrection" in June 2010. As indicated by the title meaning "revival," this album proudly declared the complete resurrection of the band. In particular, tracks like "Destiny" and "A Far-Off Distance" established a new GALNERYUS style that was melodious and catchy yet retained the intensity of metal. "A Far-Off Distance" was chosen as the ending theme for the anime "RAINBOW", marking the band's first anime tie-up.

In 2011, they released their 7th album "Phoenix Rising," produced in response to the tragedy of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Tracks like "Future Never Dies," themed around hope and rebirth, resonated deeply with fans. In 2012, a decisive blow was dealt that made the band's name known worldwide: the single "Hunting for Your Dream" was featured as the ending theme and movie theme song for the popular anime "HUNTER x HUNTER." Through video-sharing sites like YouTube, this track spread among anime and metal fans across the globe, racking up tens of millions of views.

Riding that momentum, they released their 8th album "Angel of Salvation" in October of the same year. The title track was an epic lasting 14 minutes and 42 seconds that boldly quoted Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, serving as a masterpiece that fused Syu's neoclassical ambition with Sho's (Masatoshi Ono) expressiveness. The album reached No. 9 on the Oricon daily chart (No. 17 weekly), achieving major commercial success.

4.3 Global Expansion and the Challenge of Concept Albums

In 2013, their 10th anniversary year since their major debut, they successfully held their first hall concert at Shibuya Public Hall and released the self-cover album series "The Ironhearted Flag." In 2014, they embarked on their first European tour (Germany, France, Spain), receiving an enthusiastic welcome from local fans. Following the release of their 9th album "Vetelgyus" in the same year, the band aimed for further artistic heights and set about producing a "concept album."

The 10th album "Under the Force of Courage," released in 2015, was a suite-form work depicting a fictional war chronicle through music, strongly reflecting elements of progressive metal. The meticulous structure and dramatic development in this work demonstrated that the band's creativity had reached its zenith.

5. From the Third Period Onward: Drummer Changes and a Deepening Legacy (2016-Present)

5.1 Departure of Jun-ichi and Joining of Fumiya

In 2016, drummer Jun-ichi, who had long supported the band's rhythm section, announced his departure. His exit, having been the core of the band's sound throughout 13 years of activity, shocked fans, but the band did not halt their steps, welcoming young drummer Fumiya Morishita as his successor. Fumiya was a technical drummer also known for his activities in Thousand Eyes and Unlucky Morpheus; his joining increased the speed and complexity of the band's songs, reinforcing their aggressive side.

5.2 Transfer to Warner and "Ultimate Sacrifice"

In 2017, the band transferred from VAP, their longtime home, to Warner Music Japan. Their first album after moving, "Ultimate Sacrifice," was a concept album serving as the sequel to the previous work "Under the Force of Courage," ranking 13th on the Oricon chart. Its international evaluation also became unshakeable, being selected as one of the "Best Japanese Metal Bands" by Loudwire.

In 2019, celebrating their 15th anniversary since debut, they performed at the prominent progressive metal festival "ProgPower USA" held in Atlanta, USA. In the same year, they released their 12th album "Into the Purgatory," pivoting away from the concept album path to return to a style that emphasized the individuality of each song.

5.3 Joining of LEA, the 20th Anniversary, and into the Future

In June 2020, Fumiya announced his departure. Joining as his successor was drummer LEA, who had been active in ZYGOTE and other projects. LEA possessed a style that respected both Jun-ichi and Fumiya, bringing a new groove to the band.

Even under the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the band continued their activities, releasing the special album "Union Gives Strength" in 2021 and the 20th anniversary album "Between Dread and Valor" in 2023. Then, in September 2024, they released their latest album "The Stars Will Light the Way." This work included tracks like "Go Towards the Utopia," proving that the band is still on a path of evolution even after passing 20 years. In 2025, the release of the video work "The Rising of the New Legacy" and an accompanying tour "THE LEGEND RISES TO THE FUTURE" are planned, with the legend of GALNERYUS continuing to be updated even today.
