Cult is a work on which APOCALYPTICA created a weight different from guitar with the sharp attack and low-end surge of strings. The mainly instrumental songs keep a distinctive tension while moving between silence and explosion. Turning from the cover-centered previous two albums, it is a turning-point record that placed original songs at the core. On “Hope,” “Path” and “Kaamos,” they naturally bind classical grounding and metal aggression. Covers of Grieg’s “Hall of the Mountain King” and Metallica’s “Until It Sleeps” are also included. Songs like “Struggle” and “Beyond Time” breathe the band’s full playing too. They dig deeper into the band’s own sound world. It is an important record that clearly showed their talent as composers.
