Biography

APOCALYPTICA
The Creation and Evolution of Cello Metal

1. Breaking Boundaries and Genre Fusion

In 1993, echoing through the corridors of the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, were not the melodies of traditional classical music, but the riffs of the thrash metal giant Metallica. Although the formation of APOCALYPTICA began as mere student entertainment, it eventually evolved into a musical revolution that permanently destroyed the boundaries between heavy metal and classical music.

APOCALYPTICA established the subgenre of "Cello Metal," constructing an unprecedented acoustic space that expresses the aggression and profoundness of metal solely with amplified cellos and drums, without the use of electric guitars.

Recording over 4 million album sales worldwide over a career spanning more than 30 years, APOCALYPTICA has evolved from a cover band into a progressive metal band with their own original composing capabilities. In 2024, they released "Plays Metallica Vol.2," a return to their roots, achieving collaborations with the actual members of Metallica, showing that their story continues to unfold dramatically today.

2. Biography & History

The history of Apocalyptica can be described as a process of challenging the limits of classical instruments and diversifying their musicality along with changes in their member lineup.

2.1 The Dawn: Sibelius Academy and the Ode to Metallica (1993-1997)

In 1993, four cello majors at the Sibelius Academy—Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen—began playing heavy metal, a shared hobby, on their own instruments. In 1996, they released their debut album, "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos." Initially expecting to sell around 1,000 copies, it caused a global sensation and recorded millions of sales.

2.2 Transition Period: Quest for Originality and Member Changes (1998-2002)

Their 1998 album "Inquisition Symphony" included covers of Sepultura and others, as well as their first original song, "Harmageddon." In 1999, Antero Manninen left and Perttu Kivilaakso joined. For their 2000 album "Cult," the majority of the tracks were original, and their first vocal track was also produced. In 2002, Max Lilja departed, turning the band into a trio.

2.3 Era of Change: Introduction of Drums and Establishment of the Band Format (2003-2006)

In their 2003 album "Reflections," they welcomed Dave Lombardo as a guest, introducing drums in full scale. Following a tour, Mikko Sirén officially joined in 2005.

2.4 Golden Age of Commercial Success and Vocal Collaborations (2007-2014)

"I Don't Care" from their 2007 album "Worlds Collide" reached number one on the US Billboard Rock Chart. Their 2010 album "7th Symphony" brought in guest vocalists including Gavin Rossdale of Bush, Brent Smith of Shinedown, and Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf. In 2013, they carried out the "Wagner Reloaded" project to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner's birth.

2.5 Experimentation with an Exclusive Vocalist and Return to Roots (2015-Present)

For 2015's "Shadowmaker," they employed Franky Perez as their exclusive vocalist. In 2020, they released "Cell-0," returning to their instrumental roots. In 2024, they released the sequel "Plays Metallica Vol.2," but drummer Mikko Sirén amicably departed the band in February of the same year.

4. Musical Style & Equipment

The core of their musicality lies in the "reinterpretation of heavy metal through classical instruments." They utilize the cello to function as everything: rhythm, lead, and bass.

  • Rhythm Cello: Reproduces guitar riffs using bowing techniques like striking and double stops.
  • Lead Cello: Fully utilizes high positions to perform fast playing on par with guitar solos.
  • Bass Cello: Uses octavers and other effects to cover the low-frequency range.

Equipment used: Acoustic cellos are fitted with pickups, and the sound is amplified and processed using high-gain amplifiers like Mesa/Boogie and effects pedals.

5. Apocalyptica's Legacy

APOCALYPTICA shattered stereotypes about the cello as an instrument and established their own unique art form. Their 2024 collaboration with Metallica themselves stands as the ultimate proof that APOCALYPTICA has been truly recognized by the metal community.
