1. Pioneers of the Girls Metal Band Boom
In the history of Japanese heavy metal, the "Jyou-Metal" (Women's Metal) or "Girls Metal Band Boom" that occurred in the 2010s was a rare musical and cultural phenomenon even on a global scale. Standing at its epicenter and continuing to lead the scene for 17 years is the band ALDIOUS, from Osaka.
The band name "Aldious" is a coined word combining "Ultimate" and "Melodious", and true to its name, their musicality is characterized by fusing the playing techniques of intense thrash metal and power metal with touching melodies that also resonate with J-POP. By discarding the black leather and studs that were standard for conventional metal bands and standing on stage in gorgeous dresses and curled hair known as the "Ageha-jo" (butterfly girl / hostess) style, they delivered a shock through the gap between sight and sound, opening a new horizon in the metal scene.
2. Biography: A 17-Year History of Hardship and Glory (2008-2025)
The history of Aldious is one of repeated member changes and the musical evolution acquired each time they overcame them. Under the unwavering vision of founder and guitarist Yoshi, the band has overcome numerous trials.
2.1. The Dawn: Stirrings in the Osaka Indie Scene (2008-2009)
Aldious was formed in June 2008 in Osaka, centered around guitarist Yoshi and vocalist Rami. Yoshi, originally from Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, aimed for a sound that was melodious yet heavy, and began gathering members.
Early Chaos and Member Fluidity
The lineup at the time of formation was extremely fluid and had aspects different from their established image as a "girls band" today.
- Presence of a Male Drummer: Although often omitted from official biographies, a male drummer named Candy was present in the early days of 2008. This is presumed to be a transitional formation before the band established its identity as a "strictly all-female lineup".
- Presence of Hime Ruki: Hime Ruki (-RUKI-) was an early guitarist, but she later transferred to GVLMET, another girls' melodic death metal band also based in Osaka. This fact indicates that the Osaka girls metal scene at the time was closely interconnected within a small community of musicians.
- Bassist Transitions: In 2009, a bassist named Kaze (-kaze-) was in the band but was dismissed, and Sawa joined afterwards. Interestingly, Sawa also had a period where she was in GVLMET, showing that personnel interchange between the two bands was close.
On November 7, 2009, the band released their first self-produced EP (demo recording) "Dear Slave". Released as a 4-track CD-R, this work is now an extremely hard-to-find collector's item, but it already contained the sprouts of their later signature songs, and the band launched their own Bright Star Records label, starting activities with a DIY spirit.
2.2. The First Golden Age: The Shock of "Deep Exceed" (2010-2011)
By 2010, the band established what is known as their "classic lineup".

In particular, newly joined Toki, with her trademark pink guitar and intense stage performance, radiated a charm that contrasted with the calm and collected Yoshi, becoming the band's visual icon. Breaking into the Scene
- Debut Single: On July 7, 2010, they released the single "Defended Desire". It reached #49 on the Oricon weekly rankings, attracting exceptional attention for an indie band.
- Historic Album "Deep Exceed": On October 13, 2010, they released their first full album "Deep Exceed". This album not only took 1st place on the Oricon Indies Album Weekly Ranking, but also achieved the feat of breaking into the 15th spot (7th daily) on the comprehensive weekly ranking including majors.
The fusion of sprinting rhythms—represented by tracks like "Luft" and "Ultimate Melodious"—and Rami's passionate vibrato vocals reminiscent of Enka and Kayokyoku, established the new genre of "Ageha-jo Metal" in the Japanese metal scene.
In 2011, they released their 2nd album "Determination". This work also recorded 15th on the Oricon weekly chart (highest daily 8th), producing anthems like "Spirit Black" and "Mermaid". With the success of this period, Aldious cemented their position not just as a novelty act, but as pioneers with genuine ability.
2.3. Reconstruction and Commercial Peak: The Addition of Re:NO (2012-2014)
The band's seemingly smooth-sailing activities faced their greatest crisis in June 2012 with the departure of founding member and vocalist Rami due to health reasons. Rumors of disbandment whispered due to the loss of the band's "voice," but leader Yoshi's decision was swift.
The Dawn of a New Era with Re:NO
Just one month after the departure announcement, in August 2012, Re:NO was announced as the new vocalist. Re:NO had a background as a member of the idol duo Suitei Shoujo, and possessed a husky voice with mid-low range charm and modern rock/pop sensibilities, contrasting with Rami's operatic vocalization.
This vocalist change drama ultimately succeeded in expanding the band's fan base.
- Masterpiece "District Zero": The 3rd album "District Zero", the first album after Re:NO's joining, was released in 2013, recording 7th on the Oricon weekly ranking and 4th on the daily ranking. This was a historic record, being the first time an indie girls band broke into the Oricon top 10.
- Change in Musicality: Re:NO's lyrics were more introspective and relatable, and the songs evolved into a sound incorporating more modern and digital elements, as seen in "Scrash" and "White Crow", in addition to their conventional "Kusa-melo" (cheesy melody) route.
Departure of Founding Drummer Aruto
Following the release of the 4th album "Dazed and Delight" (2014, Oricon #20), drummer Aruto announced her departure in September 2014 due to marriage and retirement from the music industry. She left the band in November of that year. The departure of the one who supported their early rhythms signaled the next transformation for the band.
2.4. Technique and Global Expansion: Marina's Addition and Transfer to VAA (2015-2018)
In April 2015, Marina joined as the new drummer. Marina had a strong background as the stepdaughter of Terry Bozzio, a legendary American drummer known for his work with Frank Zappa and Missing Persons. Her drumming, in contrast to Aruto's power style, featured more strokes, was highly technical, and had incredible stamina capable of enduring long periods of double bass barrages.
Label Transfer and Overseas Advancement
During this period, the band completely revamped their activity environment.
- Transfer to VAA: Moved distribution and management to VAA (Village Again Association) and established their own label, Radiant A.
- Contract with JPU Records: Coinciding with the release of the 5th album "Radiant A" (2015), they signed a contract with the UK label JPU Records. This enabled CD releases throughout Europe and realized their first overseas performances (such as Summer Sonic Shanghai 2017).
From 2016 to 2017, they appeared at major festivals in rapid succession, including "LOUD PARK 16", "SUMMER SONIC 2016", and "VISUAL JAPAN SUMMIT 2016". They released their 6th album "Unlimited Diffusion" (2017, Oricon #13) and embarked on a one-man tour across all 47 prefectures in Japan, reaching their peak as a live band.
Re:NO's Sudden Departure
However, the grueling tour schedule took a toll on the members' bodies. In December 2018, vocalist Re:NO announced she had been diagnosed with "Patulous Eustachian Tube" and was ordered to stop by her doctor. Consequently, she departed the band and ended her music activities after the TSUTAYA O-EAST performance on December 17, 2018. The loss of the vocalist who was the "face" of the band and brought their greatest commercial success was an immeasurable blow.
2.5. Turmoil and the COVID Pandemic: The Addition and Departure of R!N (2019-2021)
In 2019, now without a vocalist, Aldious chose to push forward and embarked on a nationwide tour without stopping. For this tour, they adopted an unprecedented system, welcoming Cyntia's former vocalist SAKI and singer-songwriter R!N (Gemie) as guest vocalists.
- Toki's Maternity Leave: Furthermore, in June of the same year, guitarist Toki went on maternity leave due to pregnancy and marriage, suspending her live activities. During that time, Narumi (ex-Destrose, ex-Disqualia) served as the support guitarist.
- R!N's Official Joining: In August 2019, after performing together on tour, R!N joined as the 3rd official vocalist. R!N was a talented singer who even handled insert songs for "Attack on Titan" and "Mobile Suit Gundam NT", and her high-tone voice brought a return-to-roots power metal sound back to the band.
In 2020, they released the best albums "Evoke 2010-2020" and "Evoke II 2010-2020", featuring re-recorded past songs with R!N's vocals. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic struck, forcing many of their scheduled live shows into cancellations, postponements, or audience-less streams.
R!N's Emergency Departure
In June 2021, just as the postponed tour's make-up shows began, an incident occurred where R!N was rushed to the hospital due to severe mental stress (depression/stress) and immediately left the band. Her tenure as an official member was slightly under two years.
2.6. Prelude to the End and Indefinite Hiatus (2021-2025)
Even after R!N's departure, the band did not cancel the tour, continuing activities by welcoming the powerful solo singer Maki Oyama as a guest vocalist. Maki Oyama's powerful and husky singing voice was highly praised by fans, leading to the release of the live Blu-ray "Aldious Tour 2020-2021 'Unlash' Live at LIQUIDROOM", but she never became an official member.
A Collapsing Lineup and a Decision
With the absence of an official vocalist continuing for over three years, cracks formed in the rhythm section that had supported the band.
- Marina's Departure: In February 2024, drummer Marina left the band due to the worsening of her chronic illness, ulcerative colitis. This left the band with only the three string instrument members: Yoshi, Toki, and Sawa.
Then, on May 17, 2025, Aldious officially announced that they would go on an "indefinite hiatus as of August 2025". In the Japanese music scene, an "indefinite hiatus" often practically means disbandment.
The Final Brilliance: The Return of Re:NO and Aruto
The band announced that their final tour "The Dominators Last Standing 2025" would be held in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka in August 2025. It was decided that vocalist Re:NO and drummer Aruto, who supported the golden era, would participate in this last tour, showing the utmost gratitude to their longtime fans.
Subsequent Movements (Late 2025)
Following the hiatus, the members have begun walking their respective paths.
- Sawa: In late July 2025, she joined the rock band First Contact, led by BLOOD STAIN CHILD guitarist RYU, as a bassist.
- Toki: On September 14, 2025, she announced her official departure from Aldious. Two days later, along with former Lovebites bassist Miho, she formed a new band, Zilqy. They began activities under the banner of "Post-Melodic Nu-Metal".

Yoshi - Guitar/Leader/Founder

5. What the Butterflies of Steel Left Behind
The 17-year trajectory of Aldious overlaps with the history of the Japanese girls metal scene itself. In an era when "women playing metal" was still looked at as an oddity, they deliberately wore the most feminine "Ageha-jo" dresses and played heavy sounds that outdid men, destroying preconceived notions of gender and music genres.
Their impact is immeasurable. The method of "fusing a visual concept with authentic metal," such as BAND-MAID's maid outfits or Lovebites' pure white dresses, is undoubtedly built upon the successful model proven by Aldious.
The indefinite hiatus in August 2025 marks the end of an era. However, dropping the curtain by bringing back golden era members Re:NO and Aruto is a testament to the band remaining sincere to their history and fans. As long as Yoshi, Toki, Sawa, and successive members continue to spin new music in their respective places, the genes of "Ultimate Melodious" will continue to live on in changed forms.
Trivia
ALDIOUS was formed in Osaka in 2008 around guitarist Yoshi. Writing in 2025, Yoshi put the month at February 2008. Their debut came in July 2010 with the single "Defended Desire."
Yoshi tends to find players online. When she put ALDIOUS together, the platform was mixi. She already knew of Rami, the band's first singer, through a mutual acquaintance — but the first approach was made by asking for her contact details over mixi.
Rami, the band's first singer, left on 30 June 2012 for health reasons. In the message posted on the official site she explained that headbanging and the larger stages ahead were bad for her condition — there was a real risk of collapsing mid-show, and a doctor had ruled it out. In the same message she wrote that whoever replaced her, what the band had built would not change, and that she would support ALDIOUS in whatever form it took.
Finding a third singer took a long time. Yoshi went through hundreds of female vocalists on YouTube, but metal singers who were unattached essentially did not exist; widening the search beyond metal left her unable to tell from a video whether someone could reach the notes, or even liked the music. Stuck, she happened to meet Marina, who put her on to a well-connected producer — Kosuke Oshima, formerly of WANDS. He said he had recently done guide-vocal work with someone better than anyone he had heard in years, and phoned her on the spot. She picked up, was asked whether a heavy all-female band interested her, and said it did. Two or three weeks later she was in a studio cutting guide vocals on ALDIOUS songs, and it fitted.
R!N had not been a metal singer. She was a singer-songwriter who performed at a piano on the street, and Yoshi admits that if she had come across her videos on YouTube she would not have made the call. From R!N's side: she had worked with Kosuke Oshima only two or three times, and when he rang while she was in the middle of a meal her first thought was that she was in trouble. She was seven years into her own career, feeling stuck, and had been planning to pause after her birthday that September. Neither party was comfortable jumping straight to full membership, so she went out on that year's tour on a trial basis first.
There is a clear reason why Evoke 2010-2020 is almost entirely self-covers with a single new song. With a third singer in place, anyone who had just discovered the band and went to do their homework before a show would find a different voice on every record. So they picked the songs they play live most and cut them again with R!N. The word evoke, Yoshi notes, is about calling up the past; what pleased her was getting the old songs out into the world with the current line-up.
R!N's departure was announced on 18 June 2021, with the national tour set to continue as a four-piece. Eleven days later, on 29 June, it was announced that the solo singer Maki Oyama would join the Unlash tour as a guest vocalist, starting from the show at LIVE rise SHUNAN in Yamaguchi on 1 July.
On 20 December 2023 the band announced on its official site that drummer Marina was leaving. In her own statement she explained that she had lived with ulcerative colitis for some time; she met ALDIOUS and joined in 2015 during a stable period that followed a long course of treatment. From early 2023 she was increasingly unwell, and tests confirmed a relapse. As her condition worsened she reached the limit of what she could sustain and concluded she could not carry on. Her final show was set for Tokyo on 19 February 2024, with Maki Oyama invited as guest vocalist at the members' particular request.
