ALDIOUS was formed in Osaka in 2008 around guitarist Yoshi. Writing in 2025, Yoshi put the month at February 2008. Their debut came in July 2010 with the single "Defended Desire."
Yoshi tends to find players online. When she put ALDIOUS together, the platform was mixi. She already knew of Rami, the band's first singer, through a mutual acquaintance — but the first approach was made by asking for her contact details over mixi.
Rami, the band's first singer, left on 30 June 2012 for health reasons. In the message posted on the official site she explained that headbanging and the larger stages ahead were bad for her condition — there was a real risk of collapsing mid-show, and a doctor had ruled it out. In the same message she wrote that whoever replaced her, what the band had built would not change, and that she would support ALDIOUS in whatever form it took.
Finding a third singer took a long time. Yoshi went through hundreds of female vocalists on YouTube, but metal singers who were unattached essentially did not exist; widening the search beyond metal left her unable to tell from a video whether someone could reach the notes, or even liked the music. Stuck, she happened to meet Marina, who put her on to a well-connected producer — Kosuke Oshima, formerly of WANDS. He said he had recently done guide-vocal work with someone better than anyone he had heard in years, and phoned her on the spot. She picked up, was asked whether a heavy all-female band interested her, and said it did. Two or three weeks later she was in a studio cutting guide vocals on ALDIOUS songs, and it fitted.
R!N had not been a metal singer. She was a singer-songwriter who performed at a piano on the street, and Yoshi admits that if she had come across her videos on YouTube she would not have made the call. From R!N's side: she had worked with Kosuke Oshima only two or three times, and when he rang while she was in the middle of a meal her first thought was that she was in trouble. She was seven years into her own career, feeling stuck, and had been planning to pause after her birthday that September. Neither party was comfortable jumping straight to full membership, so she went out on that year's tour on a trial basis first.
There is a clear reason why Evoke 2010-2020 is almost entirely self-covers with a single new song. With a third singer in place, anyone who had just discovered the band and went to do their homework before a show would find a different voice on every record. So they picked the songs they play live most and cut them again with R!N. The word evoke, Yoshi notes, is about calling up the past; what pleased her was getting the old songs out into the world with the current line-up.
R!N's departure was announced on 18 June 2021, with the national tour set to continue as a four-piece. Eleven days later, on 29 June, it was announced that the solo singer Maki Oyama would join the Unlash tour as a guest vocalist, starting from the show at LIVE rise SHUNAN in Yamaguchi on 1 July.
On 20 December 2023 the band announced on its official site that drummer Marina was leaving. In her own statement she explained that she had lived with ulcerative colitis for some time; she met ALDIOUS and joined in 2015 during a stable period that followed a long course of treatment. From early 2023 she was increasingly unwell, and tests confirmed a relapse. As her condition worsened she reached the limit of what she could sustain and concluded she could not carry on. Her final show was set for Tokyo on 19 February 2024, with Maki Oyama invited as guest vocalist at the members' particular request.
On 17 May 2025 ALDIOUS announced on their official site that they would go on indefinite hiatus from August that year. The statement, issued in the band's name, gave the reason as follows: after long discussions about where each member's life was heading, how their circumstances had changed and what each of them felt, they had arrived at this as a point to draw a line. A farewell tour of Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka was announced alongside it. The statement closes by attributing seventeen years of survival to everyone who came to a show, listened to a record or supported the band.
The farewell tour, The Dominators Last Standing 2025, was not played by the line-up of the day. Yoshi, Toki and Sawa were joined by two former members who had been through much of the band's history with them: Re:NO on vocals and Aruto on drums. The final show was at Toyosu PIT in Tokyo on 13 August 2025. In her comment before the tour Yoshi wrote that she wanted all five of them on stage as principals, and asked the audience to shout all five names.
Yoshi's comment on the hiatus puts seventeen years into numbers. Since forming in February 2008 the band had released something like ninety songs, played more than four hundred shows, toured all forty-seven prefectures and performed abroad; meeting listeners all over the country, she wrote, is something she will keep for life. She also wrote that she had wanted twenty years, twenty-five, more.
District Zero, the third album and the first made after Re:NO became the band's second singer, reached number seven on Oricon's weekly chart and number four on the daily.
Yoshi's observation is that ALDIOUS's members were all met at the right moment. Aruto, the first drummer, happened to cross her path just as her own band went on hiatus; Yoshi mentioned they were looking for a drummer, even on a support basis, and that was that. Toki at the time was doing nothing but session work and looking for somewhere permanent. And the night Yoshi went to see a girls band Marina was depping for turned out to be Marina's last with them.
What worried the band before she joined was not the singing but the movement. Bassist Sawa points out that R!N's own shows were performed seated at a piano, while theirs involve running about and headbanging — could she headbang at all, and even if she liked the recordings, would the live show put her off? In the event she visibly enjoyed it, and headbangs perfectly well now. She was, she says, given instruction.
The hardest thing for R!N in the Evoke 2010-2020 sessions was "Eversince" — reputedly the highest song in the ALDIOUS catalogue. Live, adrenaline sometimes simply delivers it; in a studio, where you can go again indefinitely, there is no settling for anything. She did it over and over. Yoshi notes that fans tell her R!N tosses those notes off effortlessly, which is not how it feels from the inside.
Kosuke Oshima, the producer who introduced R!N to the band, ended up working on Evoke 2010-2020 as well: he produced the one new song on it, the closing track, which R!N wrote herself.
Toki had been away from the band on maternity leave, and returned at the point R!N came in as the third singer. By the time of the 2020 interview the band was described as back at full strength, Toki included.
The final night at Toyosu PIT was recorded in full and released on 24 December 2025 in three formats: Blu-ray, a two-disc DVD and a two-disc CD. Presented as the summation of seventeen years, it was also offered through the Columbia Music Shop as a limited bundle adding two tour-themed T-shirt designs and a twenty-four-page full-colour photo book of the show.
There was movement after the hiatus began. On 14 September 2025 Toki announced on social media that she was leaving the band, writing that what she had gained there and the view from that stage would stay with her for life, and that she intended to carry it into whatever she did next.
Toki was moving again almost immediately. On 16 September 2025 the debut of Zilqy, a four-piece all-female metal band, was announced with her in the line-up — alongside Miho, formerly of LOVEBITES. The same announcement set a first EP, Vacant Throne, for 5 November and an introductory show, Start The Fire, for 10 December.
