Musically Incorrect

『Musically Incorrect』は、Y&Tが余計な装飾をそぎ落とし、デイヴ・メニケッティの声とギターを中心とした直線的なハード・ロックへと立ち返った作品だ。リフの手触りとライヴ感のある演奏が、曲の勢いをそのまま伝えている。90年代半ばという時代の変化の中で、バンドは流行を追うのではなく、自分たちの原点であるストレートなロックへと回帰した。 “Long Way Down”“Fly Away”“Cold Day In Hell”“No Regrets”といった楽曲では、粗く力強いリフと、ブルース由来の熱を帯びた演奏が前面に出ている。メロディアスな瞬間を残しながらも、全体としてはより硬派で骨太な手触りが際立つ。“21st Century”のような楽曲には、時代を見据えた視点も感じられる。“Quicksand”“I've Got My Own”“Pretty Prison”“Confusion”といった楽曲でも、ストレートなリフと熱のこもった演奏が前面に出ている。グランジやオルタナティヴが主流となった90年代半ばにあって、Y&Tはあえて自分たちの得意とする古典的なハード・ロックを貫いており、その姿勢が本作に確かな一貫性を与えている。流行の変化よりも自分たちの語法を信じ抜いた本作は、Y&Tの実直なロック魂を色濃く映し出した、力強い一枚である。

Musically Incorrect is a record on which Y&T shaved off needless ornament and returned to linear hard rock centered on Dave Meniketti’s voice and guitar. The feel of the riffs and the live sense of the playing convey the songs’ momentum directly. Amid the changes of the mid-1990s, the band returned to the straight rock that is its origin, rather than chasing trends. On “Long Way Down,” “Fly Away,” “Cold Day In Hell” and “No Regrets,” rough, powerful riffs and blues-derived heat come to the front. While keeping melodic moments, a harder, sturdier feel stands out overall. A song like “21st Century” carries a forward-looking view too. Believing in its own language over changing trends, it vividly reflects Y&T’s earnest rock soul — a powerful record.
