Contagious

『Contagious』は、Y&Tが持つまっすぐなハード・ロックの手応えを残しながら、コーラスと音作りをよりラジオ向きに磨き上げた作品だ。デイヴ・メニケッティの歌とギターは変わらず芯が強く、洗練されたプロダクションの中でも曲に必要な荒さと熱を保っている。80年代後半の商業的なメロディック・ロックの潮流に応えつつ、バンドの個性を失わない一枚である。 表題曲“Contagious”をはじめ、“L.A. Rocks”“The Kid Goes Crazy”“Eyes of a Stranger”といった収録曲は、キャッチーなフックと硬い演奏の間を巧みに行き来している。“Temptation”“Armed and Dangerous”のような楽曲にも、Y&Tらしい推進力が息づいている。“Fight for Your Life”“Rhythm or Not”“Bodily Harm”といった楽曲でも、力強いリフとキャッチーなコーラスが結び付いている。この時期、多くのメロディック・ロック・バンドが商業的な洗練を追求しており、Y&Tもその流れの中で自らの表現を模索していたが、それでも演奏の芯の強さは失われていない。時代の洗練を積極的に取り込みつつも、ライヴ・バンドとしての生々しい手触りを失わない本作は、80年代後半のY&Tの姿を映し出す、聴きどころの多い一枚である。

Contagious is a record on which Y&T, while keeping its straightforward hard-rock feel, polished its choruses and production to be more radio-ready. Dave Meniketti’s singing and guitar are as firmly cored as ever, keeping the necessary roughness and heat within a refined production. Answering the commercial melodic-rock current of the late 1980s while not losing the band’s identity, it is a record of its own. Led by the title track “Contagious,” tracks like “L.A. Rocks,” “The Kid Goes Crazy” and “Eyes of a Stranger” deftly move between catchy hooks and hard playing. Songs like “Temptation” and “Armed and Dangerous” breathe a Y&T-style drive too. Actively taking in the refinement of the era while not losing the raw feel of a live band, it reflects the late-1980s face of Y&T — a record with much to enjoy.
