『Enter』は、WITHIN TEMPTATIONが重く沈むギター、幽玄な鍵盤、シャロン・デン・アデルの透明な歌を組み合わせたデビュー作だ。低いグロウルと清らかな歌声の対比が、曲に悲劇的な奥行きを与えている。オランダ出身のバンドが、その暗く幻想的な世界観を世に示した出発点である。 “Restless”“Enter”“Deep Within”といった楽曲では、後年のシンフォニックな壮麗さよりも、ゴシック／ドゥーム由来の暗さが強い。“Pearls of Light”“Candles”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい荒削りな魅力が息づいている。1997年に発表された本作はヨーロッパのゴシック・メタル・シーンにおいてバンドの名を初めて広く知らしめており、この時期はまだデス・ヴォイスを大きく取り入れ後年の作風とは大きく異なる。しかしその暗く重い音の奥には、すでにバンドの叙情性の萌芽が確かに感じられる。ロバート・ウェスターホルトのデス・ヴォイスと、シャロンのソプラノが織りなす「美女と野獣」的な様式が、この時期の大きな特徴だ。静けさと重さの間で独自の世界を作り始めた、重要な出発点である。後のシンフォニック・メタルへとつながるその最初の一歩がここにあり、初期衝動に満ちた貴重な一枚だ。

Enter is the debut on which WITHIN TEMPTATION combined heavily sinking guitar, ethereal keyboards and Sharon den Adel’s clear singing. The contrast of low growls and a pure voice gives the songs a tragic depth. It is the starting point on which the Dutch band showed its dark, fantastical worldview to the world. On “Restless,” “Enter” and “Deep Within,” rather than the later symphonic grandeur, the darkness derived from gothic/doom is strong. Songs like “Pearls of Light” and “Candles” breathe an early, rough appeal too. A “beauty and the beast” style woven by Robert Westerholt’s death voice and Sharon’s soprano is a major feature of this period. It is an important starting point on which they began to make their own world between quiet and weight.
