『Good to Be Bad』は、デイヴィッド・カヴァデールの艶と迫力を併せ持つ歌声を軸に、WHITESNAKEがブルース由来のハード・ロックへと回帰した復活作だ。太いリフ、滑らかなギター・リード、大きなコーラスが、バンドの黄金期を思わせる熱量で並んでいる。長い活動休止を経て、ダグ・アルドリッチとレブ・ビーチという実力派ギタリストを擁したバンドは、力強い新章を切り開いた。 “Best Years”“Can You Hear the Wind Blow”“All for Love”“Summer Rain”といった楽曲では、重さと色気、そして歌えるメロディがバランスよく揃っている。“Lay Down Your Love”“A Fool in Love”のような楽曲にも、往年のWHITESNAKEらしい魅力が息づいている。本作はWHITESNAKE名義としては約10年ぶりのスタジオ・アルバムであり、バンドの完全な復活を印象づけた。“Got What You Need”“Til the End of Time”のような楽曲にも、往年の魅力が息づいている。単なる懐古に留まらず、演奏と音作りには成熟した余裕がある。復帰後のWHITESNAKEを確立した本作は、バンドの健在ぶりを高らかに示した、充実した一枚である。円熟した歌と力強い演奏が、全編で見事に調和している。

Good to Be Bad is a comeback album on which WHITESNAKE returned to blues-derived hard rock, centered on David Coverdale’s voice, which holds both gloss and force. Thick riffs, smooth guitar leads and big choruses line up with a heat recalling the band’s golden era. After a long hiatus, the band — with the accomplished guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach — opened a powerful new chapter. On “Best Years,” “Can You Hear the Wind Blow,” “All for Love” and “Summer Rain,” weight, allure and singable melody are balanced well. Songs like “Lay Down Your Love” and “A Fool in Love” breathe an appeal characteristic of old WHITESNAKE too. Rather than mere nostalgia, the playing and production have a matured composure. Establishing the post-hiatus WHITESNAKE, it is a full record that loudly showed the band alive and well, with matured singing and powerful playing harmonizing splendidly throughout.
