『Flesh & Blood』は、WHITESNAKEが長年磨いてきたブルース基調のハード・ロックを、現代的に引き締めた音像で再提示した作品だ。太くうねるリフ、粘りのあるリズム、そしてデイヴィッド・カヴァデールの艶と翳りを併せ持つ歌声が、冒頭からバンドの核を鮮明に描き出している。ギターは技巧を誇示するためではなく、歌を持ち上げ、曲の熱量を増幅させるために働いている。 “Shut Up & Kiss Me”“Trouble Is Your Middle Name”“Hey You (You Make Me Rock)”“Flesh & Blood”といった楽曲では、軽快な推進力と大きなサビが前へと出る一方、ミドルテンポの楽曲では、ブルース由来の間合いと重心の低さが際立っている。レブ・ビーチとジョエル・ホークストラのギターが、楽曲に豊かな彩りを加えている。“Always & Forever”“Heart of Stone”のような楽曲にも、成熟した叙情が息づいている。デビューから40年以上を経てなお、バンドの官能的で力強いサウンドは少しも色褪せていない。過去の代表作を模倣するのではなく、WHITESNAKEという看板が意味してきた官能性、威厳、そしてロックンロールの身体性を、現在の演奏で確かめ直した本作は、ベテラン・バンドの充実を鮮やかに伝える一枚である。

Flesh & Blood is a work on which WHITESNAKE re-presented the blues-based hard rock it has long honed in a modern, tightened sonic image. Thick, surging riffs, a tenacious rhythm, and David Coverdale’s voice — holding both gloss and shadow — vividly draw the band’s core from the opening. The guitars work not to show off technique but to lift the singing and amplify the songs’ heat. On “Shut Up & Kiss Me,” “Trouble Is Your Middle Name,” “Hey You (You Make Me Rock)” and “Flesh & Blood,” brisk drive and big choruses come forward, while in the mid-tempo songs the blues-derived spacing and low center of gravity stand out. The guitars of Reb Beach and Joel Hoekstra add rich color to the songs. Rather than imitating past signature works, re-confirming with present playing the sensuality, dignity and rock ’n’ roll physicality that the WHITESNAKE name has meant, it is a record that vividly conveys a veteran band’s fullness.
