『The Neon God: Part 1 - The Rise』は、W.A.S.P.が、太いギター、陰影の強い歌、そしてドラマティックな展開を駆使して、一人の人物を巡る、壮大な物語を描いたコンセプト作の前編だ。名盤『The Crimson Idol』を彷彿とさせる、緻密な物語性が、再び全面的に展開されている。曲は重く進んでいくが、そのメロディには、確かな切実さがあり、聴き手を、物語の内部へと、深く引き込んでいく。 冒頭の“Overture”から始まる物語は、“Wishing Well”のドラマ性、“Sister Sadie (And the Black Habits)”の攻撃性、そして表題曲“The Rise”まで、主人公の運命を、劇的に描き出していく。“Why Am I Here”“Asylum #9”のような曲も、物語に深みを与えている。表現は大仰でありながら、その核にあるのは、人間の痛みや、切実な願望を映す、力強いロック曲である。 二部作の前編として、物語の緊張感を、巧みに保ちながら、W.A.S.P.ならではの、演劇性と、確かなヘヴィネスとを、力強く刻んでいる点が本作の魅力だ。ローレスの、飽くなき物語への情熱が、再び見事に結実している。壮大なコンセプトの、その幕開けにふさわしい、ドラマティックで聴き応えのある一枚と言える。物語の続きが気になる。

The Neon God: Part 1 - The Rise is the first half of a concept work on which W.A.S.P., using thick guitar, strongly shaded singing and dramatic development, draws a grand story around one person. A precise narrative evoking the classic The Crimson Idol unfolds fully again. The songs proceed heavily, yet their melody has a sure earnestness, drawing the listener deeply into the story. The story, beginning from the opening “Overture,” dramatically draws the protagonist’s fate through the drama of “Wishing Well,” the aggression of “Sister Sadie (And the Black Habits)” and the title track “The Rise,” while cuts like “Why Am I Here” and “Asylum #9” deepen the story. Though the expression is grandiose, at its core are powerful rock songs reflecting human pain and earnest longing. Its appeal is that, as the first half of a diptych, it deftly keeps the story’s tension while powerfully inscribing W.A.S.P.’s theatricality and sure heaviness. Lawless’s tireless passion for narrative comes to fruition splendidly again. Fitting to open a grand concept, it is a dramatic, engaging record that makes you eager for the story’s continuation.
