Still Not Black Enough

『Still Not Black Enough』は、ブラッキー・ローレスが抱える、内なる怒りや、深い孤独感を、W.A.S.P.らしい大きなリフと、演劇的な歌とで、極めて個人的な温度で描いた作品だ。前作『The Crimson Idol』の、内省的で物語的な作風を、より個人的な方向へと推し進めており、当初はソロ作として構想されていた側面も持つ。攻撃的な曲であっても、その中心には、常に、ローレス自身の、揺れ動く個人的な感情が色濃く息づいている。 冒頭の表題曲“Still Not Black Enough”の緊張感、ジェファーソン・エアプレインの“Somebody to Love”のカヴァー、そして“Black Forever”“Scared to Death”のような曲まで、収録曲は、攻撃性の中に、深い陰影と哀感を宿している。“Goodbye America”“Keep Holding On”のような曲も、作品の個人的な深みを伝えている。 ボブ・キューリックらの演奏が、作品に確かな厚みを与えつつも、あくまでローレスの、切実な声と言葉を、前面へと押し出している点が本作の魅力だ。バンドの看板を掲げながらも、ソロ作のような、密度の高い個人的な表現を追求している。W.A.S.P.の、より内省的でパーソナルな側面を深く味わえる、意欲的な一枚と言える。ローレスの内面が色濃い。

Still Not Black Enough is a work on which Blackie Lawless draws his inner anger and deep loneliness at an extremely personal temperature, with W.A.S.P.-like big riffs and theatrical singing. Pushing the introspective, narrative style of the previous The Crimson Idol in a more personal direction, it also has a side originally conceived as a solo work. Even in aggressive songs, Lawless’s own wavering personal emotion always breathes strongly at their center. From the tension of the opening title track “Still Not Black Enough” and a cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” to cuts like “Black Forever” and “Scared to Death,” the songs hold deep shading and sorrow within aggression, while cuts like “Goodbye America” and “Keep Holding On” convey the work’s personal depth. Its appeal is that the playing of Bob Kulick and others gives the work sure thickness while foregrounding Lawless’s earnest voice and words. Carrying the band’s banner, it pursues dense, personal expression like a solo work. Letting you deeply savor a more introspective, personal side of W.A.S.P., it is an ambitious record — Lawless’s inner world strongly present.
