『Babylon』は、W.A.S.P.が、宗教的で、終末的なイメージを、重厚なリフと、演劇的な歌唱へと巧みに落とし込んだ、彼ららしい、濃密なコンセプト作だ。旧約聖書の「黙示録」などをモチーフにした、壮大な世界観が展開されている。攻撃性のある力強い曲と、陰りを帯びた叙情的なメロディとが、交互に現れることで、アルバム全体に、不穏で、張り詰めた緊張感を作り出している。 冒頭“Crazy”の勢い、“Live to Die Another Day”のドラマ性、そして表題曲“Babylon's Burning”の攻撃性まで、収録曲は、明確な物語性を持つ構成と、ブラッキー・ローレスの、圧倒的な存在感のある声とで、しっかりと引き締められている。“Godless Run”“Thunder Red”のような曲も、作品の重厚な世界観を、深く伝えている。 ダークで、大仰でありながらも、キャッチーで覚えやすいフックを、決して忘れていない、W.A.S.P.ならではの、確かな個性が、色濃く表れた一枚だ。ローレスの、円熟した表現力と、壮大なコンセプトを描く手腕が、見事に発揮されている。終末的なテーマと、力強いヘヴィ・メタルとを、高い完成度で結び付けた、聴き応えのある充実作と言える。ローレスの世界観が濃い一枚だ。

Babylon is W.A.S.P.’s dense concept work in its own manner, deftly rendering religious, apocalyptic imagery into weighty riffs and theatrical singing. A grand world with motifs such as the Book of Revelation unfolds. By aggressive, powerful songs and shaded, lyrical melody appearing in turn, it creates an uneasy, taut tension across the whole album. From the momentum of the opener “Crazy” and the drama of “Live to Die Another Day” to the aggression of the title track “Babylon’s Burning,” the songs are firmly tightened by a construction with clear narrative and Blackie Lawless’s overwhelmingly present voice, while cuts like “Godless Run” and “Thunder Red” deeply convey the work’s weighty world. A record on which W.A.S.P.’s sure character strongly appears — dark and grandiose yet never forgetting catchy, memorable hooks. Lawless’s mature expression and skill in drawing a grand concept are splendidly displayed. Binding an apocalyptic theme and powerful heavy metal at high polish, it is an engaging, fulfilling work — a record with a strong Lawless world.
