『Vandenberg』は、エイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグの歌うようなギターを軸に、メロディと重さを丁寧に釣り合わせたデビュー作だ。オランダ出身のバンドで、バート・ヘーリンク(ヴォーカル)、エイドリアン・ヴァンデンバーグ(ギター/キーボード)、ディック・ケンパー(ベース)、ヨス・ズーマー(ドラム)という編成。エイドリアンは前身バンド、ティーザーを経て、シン・リジィのオーディションに落ちた後にこのバンドを立ち上げた。1982年にアトコから発表され、ジミー・ペイジのソル・スタジオで録音、ヴァンデンバーグとスチュアート・エップスがプロデュースした。全曲をエイドリアンが書いている。 リフは硬く、ソロは伸びやかで、各曲はヨーロピアン・ハード・ロックらしい品の良さを持つ。80年代初期のパワー・バラードの先駆けとされる“Burning Heart”は全米39位のヒットとなり、アルバムもビルボード200で65位に達した。疾走する“Your Love Is in Vain”やギター・アクロバットが光る“Wait”など、直進するロック感と叙情が自然につながる。技巧を押し付けず、曲の感情を強くするために使う姿勢が印象に残る。オジー・オズボーンやキッスとのツアーで足場を築いた、過小評価された名デビュー作である。

Vandenberg is the debut on which the band balanced melody and weight around Adrian Vandenberg’s singing guitar. The Dutch group — Bert Heerink (vocals), Adrian Vandenberg (guitar, keyboards), Dick Kemper (bass) and Jos Zoomer (drums) — formed after Adrian, coming from his earlier band Teaser, failed a Thin Lizzy audition. Released on Atco in 1982, recorded at Jimmy Page’s Sol Studios and produced by Vandenberg and Stuart Epps, it was written entirely by Adrian. The riffs are hard, the solos expansive, and each song carries a European hard-rock class. “Burning Heart,” considered one of the early-’80s’ first power ballads, became a No. 39 US hit, and the album reached No. 65 on the Billboard 200. From the racing “Your Love Is in Vain” to the guitar acrobatics of “Wait,” driving rock and lyricism connect naturally. Adrian never forces technique, using it to strengthen a song’s emotion. Built up through tours with Ozzy Osbourne and KISS, it is an underrated great debut.
