Ember to Inferno

『Ember to Inferno』は、フロリダ州オーランドで結成されたTRIVIUMが、若い野心をそのまま刻み付けたデビュー作だ。中心人物マット・ヒーフィーは日本の岩国で生まれた日系アメリカ人で、17歳にして本作の楽曲の大半を書き上げたと言われる。ドラムのトラヴィス・スミス、ベースのブレント・ヤングと共に、ドイツのLifeforce Recordsから放たれた本作には、IN FLAMESらメロディック・デス・メタルの影響と、メタルコアの攻撃性が色濃く混じり合っている。後の飛躍を予感させる、荒削りながらも才気あふれる出発点である。 “Pillars of Serpents”“If I Could Collapse the Masses”では、鋭いツイン・ギターのハーモニーと激しいブレイクダウンが交錯し、若きバンドの技術と衝動が一体となって迸る。“Fugue (A Revelation)”“To Burn the Eye”といった楽曲には、単純な速さや重さに留まらない構築性と暗いメロディ感覚がすでに宿っている。クリーンとハーシュを行き来するヒーフィーのヴォーカルは発展途上ながら、確かな個性を主張する。専制と自由をめぐるテーマを掲げた本作は、以後のTRIVIUMの音楽的な核をすでに提示しており、彼らの物語の始まりを鮮烈に告げる充実のデビュー作だ。

Ember to Inferno is the debut on which Trivium, formed in Orlando, Florida, stamped down their youthful ambition directly. Central figure Matt Heafy — a Japanese-American born in Iwakuni, Japan — is said to have written most of the album at just seventeen. Released through Germany's Lifeforce Records with drummer Travis Smith and bassist Brent Young, the record deeply blends the influence of melodic death metal such as In Flames with metalcore aggression. Rough yet brimming with talent, it is a starting point that hints at the leaps to come. On "Pillars of Serpents" and "If I Could Collapse the Masses," sharp twin-guitar harmonies and violent breakdowns interweave, the young band's technique and impulse bursting out as one. Songs like "Fugue (A Revelation)" and "To Burn the Eye" already carry a constructive sense and dark melody that go beyond mere speed or weight. Heafy's vocals, moving between clean and harsh, are still developing but assert a clear identity. Built on themes of tyranny and freedom, the album already presents the musical core of later Trivium, vividly announcing the beginning of their story.
