『IV』は、暗いギター、低いリズム、悲哀を帯びたヴォーカルを軸に、TO DIE FORがゴシック・メタルの陰影を描いた第4作だ。2004年、脱退したヤペ・ペラタロと彼のバンド、ティアガがTO DIE FORの名を引き継ぎ、2005年に本作を送り出した。タイトルはそのまま通算4作目であることを示している。曲は重さだけに寄らず、コーラスには覚えやすいメロディが置かれている。ペラタロの声こそがこのバンドの核であることを、聴き手に改めて確認させることになった作品でもあった。 静かな場面からヘヴィな推進へ移るたびに、喪失感とドラマ性が濃くなっていく。冒頭の“Autumn Forever”から“This World Is Made for Me”“Lies (For Fools)”、シングルとなった“New Year's Day”を経て、“Chaotic Me”“Little Deaths”“Fragmented”“Endlessly”や締めの“Last Breath”まで、冷たい叙情が一貫している。バンド名をめぐる混乱の後だけに、ここで示された芯の強さは印象深い。北欧らしい冷たさと歌心を結び付けた、TO DIE FORの充実作である。

IV is the fourth album, on which To/Die/For drew gothic metal's shadows around dark guitar, low rhythm and sorrow-tinged vocals. In 2004 the departed Jape Perätalo and his band Tiaga took over the To/Die/For name, and this record followed in 2005. The title simply signals that it's their fourth. The songs don't lean on weight alone; memorable melody is placed in the choruses. It's also a record that made listeners confirm again that Perätalo's voice is this band's core. Each time it moves from a quiet passage into heavy drive, the sense of loss and the drama deepen. From the opener “Autumn Forever” through “This World Is Made for Me,” “Lies (For Fools),” the single “New Year's Day,” “Chaotic Me,” “Little Deaths,” “Fragmented,” “Endlessly” and the closing “Last Breath,” a cold lyricism holds throughout. Coming after the confusion over the band name, the firmness shown here is striking. A satisfying record that binds Nordic coldness to a melodic sense.
